To get around this, why not pre-render next page in background while user is seeing current page? When user moves to next page, the pre-rendered page can be displayed immediately. KDE's image viewer 'kuickshow' does also similar trick - pre-decodes next JPEG image while showing the current one.
I think this is already the case with Okular. Could you please confirm so?
