Description Hinrich Aue 2004-10-24 14:36:35 UTC
Version: kdesktop 3.3.0a-1 (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-1)
OS: Linux

I saw several entries for this bug, all resolved. (perhaps I just haven't found more)
But desktop arrangement doesn't do what it expected to do.
This is annoying since several 3.x versions, and it never worked for me for NEARLY ALL VERSIONS since 2.2 something.
I have my kicker on the left side. The Desktop does not handle this correctly.
Whe I say allign to grid, some Icons are out of order. When I move one of the unordered ones, all magically snap into position?!

Putting files on the desktop pushes others away (very anoying).
I turned of arrangement completely (not vertical, no grid, not horrizontal) and when I logoff and on again, icons aren't in place anymore.
Much worse, whe I turn on the grid and relogon, they are out of order COMPLETELY (ok some alligned to the grid some not, but not like I left them).
for example I have two FS-links extern_1 and extern_2 on Desktop, and they simply switch positions?!
(I don't understand this, but it steals my nerves.)
I have to rearrange icons every time I login.
Then I turn on the grid, rearrange again, turn of grid and hope.
I saw this behavior on several KDE desktops around.
I haven't found a workaround, or what I have done wrong.
I deleted my .kde dir and reconfigure totally kde to get rid of old and wrong configuration ballast, didn't help.

in short: I don't understand how ot works, and what it does wrong, seems kinda' chaotic.

I know you heared this several times for sure. But I heared some people would willing to switch to something else than KDE.
I would simply love to see this work finally, because I love KDE so much. It's the best DE availabe. (true feelings :-))

I think that some of these issues will have been fixed or improved in 3.3.2.

Can you upgrade KDE and then update this bug report?

If you want your icons aligned to grid, I suggest that you try adding:

DesktopGridSpacing=x,y

to your: ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals file, in the

[DesktopIcons]

section.

I use: DesktopGridSpacing=50,6 with 32x32 icons.

With Align to Grid and the spacing set as above, I do not see any problems in what will be 3.3.2 so I am not confirming this.

This has been solved for KDE 3.4

DesktopGridSpacing seems to be broken in 3.4 beta2 "keinstein". it used to work fine here using 3.3.x and 3.4 beta1.

my icons have size 32, just if this is important. has the configure variable be changed from DekstopGridSpacing to something else, or has the syntax changed or whatever?
