Description Ali Akcaagac 2004-10-15 09:22:37 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc 3.4.1
OS: Linux

KMAIL is losing the entire eMail if connection to pop3 and smtp server fails. eMail is not being saved to Outbox - not saved at all.

I think this is a quite serious issue. Following situation I was in when this happened.

I was writing an eMail this morning for a Job Application somewhere in the IT business here in germany.

So while I was writing the eMail I pressed 'sent' to have the eMail sent as usually. I then was prompted with a Dialog informing me that WEB.de want's me to authenticate with pop3 first before I can sent anything on their smtp server and that my eMail is being saved in Outbox until I have done so. This is probably a security feature from WEB.de in case someone authenticates with a different MUA or MTA - but dunno exactly - I only used Evolution on that account minutes earlier.

Unfortunately NO eMail has been saved, neither in the Outbox nor in the Sentbox within the Mail directory (MDir format). The eMail got lost and I had to re-write it again using Evolution that time. I also verified the entire Mail directory and it's subdir but nothing was found.

Any communicative feedback here ?

Is this a one time problem or can you reproduce this easily?

Well this isn't the first time. Saw this a couple of times since KDE pre 3.0 times. The problem can be reproduced but not easily. It depends on what you get returned from the eMail service provider.

Usually if either pop'ing or smtp'ing emails fail somehow due to eMail service provider maintainance or something.

From a programmers view this looks like some unchecked condition in KMail itself e.g. it doesn't deal with such situations correctly and thus doesn't know what to do and unfortunately it doesn't save the eMail correctly. The dialog shown says that the eMail is being saved in Outbox but unfortunately this wasn't the case.

I recall having lost the one or other very important email that way.

If you work out how to reproduce it please inform us. I'm interested.

Personally I don't know how to reproduce this and haven't experienced it or
know anyone who has, so it will be difficult for me to solve it.

Don.

There was some discussion about eMails being lost with KMail recently on kde-core-developers list. Looks like others seem to have this one as well.

Please don't spread FUD. What emails on core-devel are you referring to?
Please post links to the archive.

My bad, I should have post the reference as well with my initial reply.

The steps njaard shows are quite similar I did except I didn't use DIMAP.

1) I read my email.
2) I responded to the email.
3) Mail send happens.
4) Later on I notice that folder X is empty and not having the email saved.

That's completely unrelated.

I see, since I read these eMails it reminded me about my own situation with losing information and concluded (asumed) them to be quite similar. I know and fully understand that this bug is hard to trigger...
