Description Peter Lunicks 2004-08-13 04:39:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources

I'd like to see a feature similar to a feature in cwm, "the ability to search for windows", and while I'm not familiar with the exact way in which cwm implements this (I haven't used it), a user would hopefully be able to enter some key-combo (bound with keybindings in kcontrol) and bring up a dialog box/window where he can type in a search query. Maybe a list in that same window, below the text box, would be updated as the user typed? The user should be able to press the Up and Down keys (without having to press tab or use the mouse) to select a window, and Enter to open it (bring it to the front, possibly switch virtual desktops as well). Backspace and other editing keys should change the search query which should automatically update the list. This would be very useful for those of who commonly have 20+ konqueror windows open+other windows ;)

Why is the Alt+F5 dialog not sufficient for you?
I somehow doubt the real usefulness of this feature - window titles are not all visible at the same time, so it would be different from searching e.g. in text. If you right now had to search for any window you have open, how many window titles of your open windows can you remember?

Waiting for a response.

I may not remember the exact title, but I'm likely to remember a word or two.
If it's the kind of searching that was recently (3.3) implemented in for example, kmail and parts of kcontrol (e.g. key binding choosing), then all I would have to do would be to type in a word or part of a word and 9/10 of my windows' names would disappear from the list, leaving me a few to pick from, without having to scan the entire list of what might be 40+ windows, which I would have to do if I simply pressed alt+f5. I want to find what I'm looking for quickly.

Actually, a feature to search konqueror's tabs would actually be even more convenient -- all tabs of every konqueror window open, whether in front or back, in a popup list which is searchable by the same quick method as window titles, kmail emails, etc. with the one-line search box.
(I apologize for the much-delayed response.)

The Expose-like feature in KDE4 has this ability. It still might make sense to add it to the non-composited case somehow.
