Description Ranma 2004-08-12 17:46:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

At this time we have spell checking on the fly in konqueror, kmail and knode (maybe more apps too) which is great, but to change the language is different in konqueror than in kmail and knode. Different menu location and dialog box, it would be nice to have it unified.
Also, having to go to a menu to change the on the fly spell checking is a nuisance, specially when you write a lot in different languages.
I was thinking in a a quick dropmenu on the toolbar with the installed aspell/ispell installed languages. This way, changing the on the fly spell checking would be a lot easier and much more intuitive.
Another option would be to have an app in the system tray that has the option to change the dictionary language for all KDE applications, maybe this would be even better than the previous option.

Or better yet, let it detect the current language (Bug 66516). But I agree, currently changing the active setting is an annoying task.

I know, but there are two reasons why I asked for this:
1. The other wish, that I'm aware of, it's much more dificult to do that what I'm asking here that would be an easy and very usefull feature.

2. Even if that other wish is fulfilled, it would be nice to still have a manual and easy way to change the language manually, in case the detection fails or things like that. Maybe a dropdown menu with "automatic", "language 1", "language 2", etc.

i second this wish. I type a lot in german and equally as much in english... so i'd have to switch all the time... instead i ignore the red spelling hints.
which, sort of, is not the purpose...

I just wanted to post an almost identical bugreport just now.

I write and communicate in many languages as well, and a on-the-fly change of dictionary would be more then welcome.

I'm using 3.4.3 right now, and what's been done in Kmail and what I heard is done in Kopete (in 3.5) is already awesome (although the kmail bit doesn't work for me perfectly yet). But a system to change the dictionary globally and in a moment would solve a lot of annoyances.

I like the idea with the system tray button/menu/applet. I would add to it another idea though - that the user would be able to add his/her own keyboard shortcuts for the dictionaries (s)he uses most often. It would be great to think about people who use several languages (not just two).

A system tray applet which allows a global language setting for text boxes would be great. The user should also be able to override this for individual text boxes; I think the best way would be to have language selection appear in the context menu when the user right-clicks on a text area.
