Description Martin Traverse 2004-08-12 15:27:06 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.3)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc 3.3.3
OS: Linux

The automatic background spell checking in the KTextEdit class is supposed to highlight misspelled words. When it works this is lovely, but sometimes it doesn't, which is particularly annoying if one is relying on it. The problem is intermittent, which I know doesn't help in tracing it down. Sometimes I type a misspelled word and it is highlighted for a split second and then returns to the default colour. Sometimes it might not be highlighted at all. Sometimes highlighting is working perfectly, then I type one extra misspelled word and all the highlighted words return to the default colour. Sometimes it works perfectly. Turning the automatic highlighting off and on again will re-highlight all misspelled words, but then sometimes as soon as you start typing the highlighting disappears again.

I encounter this problem both in KMail and in one of my own applications. I haven't noticed it in KHTML but then I don't very often use message boards etc. online. I do not know whether this is something peculiar to my system or not.

While I'm here, a wishlist point would be to have right-clicking misspelled words bring up a list of suggestions as part of the built in behaviour of the KTextEdit class.

Just an addendum, the same problem *is* occuring in text fields in konqueror.

This same problem happens with me on SUSE 9.1 with KDE 3.2 and 3.3 final. I believe that the "problem" relates to KDE thinking you are writing in a different language if you spell too many words wrong. If you add a sufficient number of correctly spelled words the highlighting should resume. I do find this to be a bit of an inconvenience. The right click drop down would be a great addition as well.

On my system with Mandrake 10.1 Community and 10.1rc1 before it, the misspelled word flashes and only occasionally will the word be highlighted after a minute or so of delay. I am using KDE 3.2.3 with the latest updates from the 10.1 Community mirrors. On the same system with Mandrake 9.2 and KDE 3.1, the auto spell check worked perfectly.

I find this one slightly annoying, so I'll confirm it as well. Comment #2 is interesting, since I mostly use this tool on Distributed Proofreaders, so my text fields often contain archaic English, Latin, pre-spelling-reform German, and a mess of other things. Most often I see some highlighting appear when the field first loads (already populated with text, in my case), then it disappears. While typing this comment, the "pre-" above has turned red and then back to black a couple of times.

KDE 3.4.1 on Gentoo here.

I am using KDE4 and I still see this problem (it may be unrelated, but it's close). When typing into a text edit (the multiline editing) in a KTextEdit, typing an alphabetic character before basically any non-alphanumeric character at the end of the edit (the symbol must be typed before the character) cancels the spell check in its paragraph until moved away from. returning does not disable it again. Also, when a quoted string is at the end of a paragraph (seems to be the first one only), it also disables it temporarily. I also noticed it with /[A-Za-z]+: $/, which is not enabled again until changed. I've only noticed it in KDE4 (Konqueror and Kopete at least) and the KDE3 (Konversation is all I have to test with) apps don't appear to have the same problem. Not sure if it's the backend causing it or not. Hope this helps narrowing the problem down.

I am running KDE 4.7.4 on Linux Mint KDE 12 and this bug is still ocurring. It mostly occurs after typing words totalling to about 35 chracters.
