Description James Horey 2004-08-11 01:27:55 UTC
Version: unknown (using KDE 3.2.3, (3.1))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.4 (Debian 1:3.3.4-7)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.7

Hi, I thought it would be a good thing if it were possible to use the pre-existing KAddressbook categories as distribution lists. For instance, I may have several contacts under "School". Instead of creating a seperate distribution list also called "School", I should be able to just send an email to the "School" category. Thanks for reading!

This would also work around many occurences of bug 68422 (contacts listed multiple times in the Address Selection dialog)
Comment 2 John van Spaandonk 2005-06-21 22:27:24 UTC
In KDE 3.4.1 I cannot even create a distribution list.
The kaddressbook help does not help here because it does not say how to
select the distribution list view.
(BTW the kaddressbook help is not directly available if you use kontact...)
Anyway, creating distribution lists is _not_ an option on my file menu.
So basically I am back to selecting addressess one by one.
I can't believe it!

In KAddressbook, Settings -> Show Extension Bar -> Distribution List Editor.
In KMail, if you have multiple To: fields, there is an option "Save List".
Hope this helps...

Thanks James, that helped.
I am now able to manage my distribution lists...

I noticed the following issues, which I add here to help the developers
1 Not easy to think about Settings-Show extension Bar if you want to
add a distribution list. Usability issue. What about adding a menu item
to the edit menu? Not that I'm a usability expert :-)

2 When you use Kontact and switch from mail to contact to mail to contact:
the extension bar menu items does not show _any_ options.
(this is why I did not find it in the first place: it just shows an
  empty square)

It looks like there are some issues regarding the use of Kontact versus
the separate applications...

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
Comment 8 Carsten Schlipf 2012-08-20 17:14:48 UTC
Yes, this is still valid and would give the contact categories much more power. Today I have to organize contacts in categories and create separate distribution lists. In my case distribution lists often contain the same people as a certain category - e.g. members of my work group/team.
