Description Gogs 2004-06-23 08:47:29 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc-3.4.1
OS: Linux

I've just downloaded and compiled a pretty recent cvs. I see now we have yet ANOTHER toolbar for Konqueror (Document Relations, which incidentally doesn't seem to work correctly, but I'm sure that'll be fixed).

I have to say I think the whole Konqueror toolbar setup is a complete and utter MESS! Why do we need so many??

Maybe this is just me, but I'd be interested in hearing what other KDE users/developers think. To me there should be ONE toolbar for navigation, ONE for location and ONE for search, with the navigation bar having possibly different icon options for web browsing/file manager.

I completly agree with you. For me it's almost impossible to get a desired icon configuration for even one profile (e.g. webbrowsing). A simple task like removing one icon and adding another at a desired position becomes a trial and error operation randomly removing several hidden includes and adding icons to all the different toolbars to see if and where it appears. The task becomes almost impossible if you want to configure more than one profile in different ways. There is no straightforward way to add and remove icons for the one profile without messing up the other.

At least the problem that your changes to the toolbar do not directly take effect went away with KDE 3.3.

you can change konqueror.rc name in profile. ie in "webbrowsing" profile change name to konquerorweb.rc. http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18412
web and file browsing should have different .rc files by default.

The only webbrowser with a decent default toolbar I have seen so far is Safari. All other browsers I've used, and that includes major ones like IE and Firefox, as well as Konqueror, have way to much clutter there. Luckily all this can be reconfigured, and that's what I promptly do when confronted with such a mess. [Back] [Forward] [Reload/Stop] [Addressbar] - that's my ideal toolbar. Also, I use the back and forward toolbar buttons only if I want to go back/forward several items (I use the back and forward mousebuttons otherwise) so perhaps these buttons should optionally always pop up their menus.
