Description Stefan Kebekus 2004-06-14 10:24:39 UTC
Version: 1.6.2 (using KDE 3.2.2, compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-113)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.22-bk36

Hello,

I just send a letter to a mailing list instead of replying to the author privately ---highly embarassing. I realize that I should have hit "Reply to author" rather than just "Reply", but I guess that won't be the last time I make that mistake when I am in a hurry.

I would therefore ask for an option (or a mail folder property) to switch on a warning "Do you really want to reply to the list rather than to the author".

Best, and thanks for the great program.

Stefan.

This bug stems from a decision to change "Reply" from basically replying to the author to reply to the mailing list instead (if mailing list headers are present). This despite the existence of a Reply-list function and button (not present by default on the toolbar).

If you want to avoid this problem, remove the 'Reply...' button from your toolbar and replace it with the the 'Reply to Author...' button (which looks the same) and add the 'Reply to Mailing List...' button as well or use the 'Reply' button with the dropdown list.

Does anyone know why this decision was made? It seems a bad idea to me, since I was just caught out by it.

I agree, this default should be changed!

If you press "reply", or simply use the shortcut "R", you think (intuitively) that you reply to the address that is listed as the sender. In fact, it may not be apparent other from the "To"-header that the original message was sent to a mailing list. But usually one ignores the "To"-header, when reading emails, and looks only at the sender.

Quoting parts of a mail I send to the KDE usability mailing list:

Many mailinglists contain a (hidden) reply-to in there header so that if one
replies, the answer is directed to the mailinglist instead of the sender. This
(sometimes questionable choice) is made in order to ensure discusion on the
list. But not always people are aware what they are actually doing. Sometimes
a mail missed the filter, so one thought it was a personal mail and did not
see that it was a mailinglist mail. Sometimes people are not aware of the
reply too because they do not often post to the list. Or sometimes people
decide to make the mail personal while they are writting and forget about the
fact that it is going to the list. I am using mailinglists for many years now,
but I have to admit this is happening to me too. I think it is a human thing.
Therefor the request in the above wish-report is too include a (of course
configurable) option which asks the user if he wants to send the mail to the
reply-to (mailinglist) or to the original sender.

There would be two points where this could be implemented:
- When the user presses or clicks to reply.
- When the user clicks on send.
The second one would be better from my opinion, but may be more dificult to
implement, since the origin of the mail would needed to be stored until it is
send, even if it is saved as a draft or restored by session management. So I
would also be happy with the first one.

I almost forgot about this "feature", until for some reasons I switched my kmail shortcut configuration back to the default, and... replied with "R"...unfortunately to the mailing-list, not the author - highly embarassing (again!)

Please, please, please, make "R" the default short-cut for "reply to author". This is what people typically want. Currently, the default short-cut for "reply to author" is "Shift+A" - nobody uses that! Ever!

Also think about what can be worse - accidentally sending a private e-mail to the mailing list, or accidentally sending a public e-mail to one person?

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
