Description Dominic Battre 2004-05-30 12:07:34 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

It would be nice to see some statistics about the battery.

Esp. an estimation of how long a fully charged battery can give power.
i.e. the ratio
last full capacity: 46170 mWh (/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info)
present rate: 16262 mW (/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state)
(this statistic can be given only if the notebook runs on battery as the power consumption is significantly lower)

The ratio
last full capacity: 46170 mWh
design capacity: 47520 mWh
(/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info) is quite interesting as well.

If you buy a used notebook you might find this information very valuable.
This shouldn't be more than two/three mouse clicks away from the battery symbol...

> cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info
present: yes
design capacity: 54720 mWh
last full capacity: 53200 mWh
battery technology: rechargeable
design voltage: 14400 mV
design capacity warning: 4256 mWh
design capacity low: 1596 mWh
capacity granularity 1: 266 mWh
capacity granularity 2: 266 mWh
model number: PC-VP-WP22/OP-570-74001
serial number:
battery type: Lion
OEM info: FIC

> cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charged
present rate: 0 mW
remaining capacity: 53200 mWh
present voltage: 16420 mV

The only thing I missed from GNOME was the battery meter. The two things I care about are battery "health" - the ratio of last full capacity to design capacity, and approximate remaining time. It would be a Godsend if you could add those two pieces of info to be visible somewhere. Thank you.

Using KDE4.4 and not sign of this feature. The only thing I found in KDE is mailing list where the main point of the discussion was that this feature is useless! The argument against was driven by the fact that the person in charge had experience with buggy drivers or broken batteries that produce unreliable info.

To me battery health and especially remaining time are the crucial feature on a netbook.
I feel really frustrated since moved to KDE from Gnome.
Hopefully someone would hear our wishes.
