Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1) Installed from: SuSE RPMs OS: Linux I hope this is a new issue. Actually, it is not kdm, but even more general. As far as I can tell, there is no possibility to log in with KDM when the HOME directory is not present. There should be a fallback - like, creating necessary links / files in the /tmp directory (which KDE uses anyway), and providing at least some basic functionality, so that users can e.g. browse / use config tools / whatever. We have a lot of students. They are all authenticated by a LDAP, but some times the file server with their $HOME is not available or their $HOME is not yet set up. KDE should be able to handle such situations. Regards, j.
you can already do some sanity checks and/or emergency setup via various PAM modules and via the Xstartup script. kdm itself does not care for $HOME.
