Description scaba 2004-03-22 17:36:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Compiler: GCC 3.3.2
OS: Linux

The font size in the 'input area' below the 'chat view' gets automatically adjusted to the system's default font. It should be possible to store the font type and size of the 'input area' separately from the system's defaults. Preferably using the settings specified in Kopete's option menu.
It would be nice if the fonts in both, the 'input area' and the 'chat view', could be adjusted with the same option and that thus the font sizes match. Because now, system font "Sans Serif" size "10" in the 'input area' matches Kopete's font setting "Sans Serif" size "8" in the 'chat view'. On the other hand, system font "Sans Serif" size "11" in the 'input area' doesn't match Kopete's font setting "Sans Serif" size "9" in the 'chat view' at all.
I have the impression that the difference between size "8" and "9" of Kopete's font setting is abnormally big.

Completely agreed. Kopete's ability to alter what font the buddies you chat with see is extremely lacking.
Comment 2 Ian Smith 2005-05-23 15:25:18 UTC
This problem is far worse as I see it -- the font size in the input window
is tiny, *far* smaller than my KDE default font, and so small as to cause
real eyestrain. What's worst is it's not configurable within Kopete.
This is making Kopete unusable for me.

Here's some info: I'm using Kopete 0.10 from KDE 3.4.0 "b" from SUSE
linux 9.3. The resolution part of my xdpyinfo:

  screen #0:
  print screen: no
  dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (445x278 millimeters)
  resolution: 73x73 dots per inch

My KDE font (as per Control Centre): Sans Serif 11
The "Base Font" setting in Kopete: Sans Serif 9

So, if everything is working, the Kopete *chat* window should currently
be using *smaller* text than my desktop icons, menu bars, etc. But it's
actually larger, like about 13 point, which I find inconvenient and ugly.
But text in the Kopete *input* window is miniscule -- far too small to
read comfortably.

Now, I change the "Base Font" setting in Kopete to Sans Serif 11. The
*chat* window text is now horribly huge. But the *input* window hasn't
changed in the slightest -- it's still tiny.

kopete uses for the "input area" the "desktop font" of kde! if somebody understands that, please explain.
because the "chat window"'s font is configurable it's not clear to me why the "input area"'s font is not configurable, too.
imo the chat-window-font should be chosen from the global font-configuration (as it should match the font used for other "read-only" apps), but the input-area-font should be configurable.
Comment 4 Matti Jagula 2005-07-26 09:25:58 UTC
Regarding the tiny font problem in input area as reported by Ian Smith, it seems that the input area does not use the KDE default font. It apparently reads its font from kopete config section 'RichTextEditor' (kopete/chatview/krichtexteditpart.cpp). It also writes the font back when it gets changed, but I cannot determine if setFont(QString) ever gets called in kopete for kde 3.4.1. It seems that the font got set to a small value some time in the past (or as a default value on installation) and it cannot be changed.

A temporary workaround for the problem would be to edit the .kde/share/config/kopeterc file and set the Font property in RichTextEditor section to something saner.

problem still exists.
set the font from 8pt to 9pt and pressed "apply" -- the font in the chat-area (already bigger than 8pt) got even bigger, the font in inputare does not change!
after closing/reopening the whole chat-window the font of inputarea changed too.
but there's still a difference of 2 or 3pt between chat and input despite the configuration showing only one font to configure.
i do not mind to have two different font sizes but i would like to be able to _configure_ both independent and not have them scaled by an unknown and unreachable ratio
Comment 6 Oleg Atamanenko 2006-06-21 17:39:20 UTC
Yes, it would be good. I'm using Kopete and unability to change the font of the input area annoying me. It would be great, guys, if you implement ability to change font in the input area.
Comment 7 Alexandre Pereira 2006-06-23 12:22:40 UTC
this is a problem of X dpi's.

the input font will be the font specified on the configuration -> appearence -> color and fonts.

in my testing , the X dpi of 96x96 is the most correct

be carefull , dont forget to change the font also in the rich text toolbar -> font ( it doesnt change automaticly )

This bug is still there in 3.5, and is getting increasingly annoying, especially when kopete is used with Xgl/Compiz, a combination which has a tendency to shrink font sizes.
Comment 11 arne anka 2007-04-24 16:03:04 UTC
why is this still new? with 80 votes and 10 comments it should be considered it confirmed -- especially as it ist probably simply to fix, just connect the fornt-size for the chatwindow with those for the inputarea.

Let the status CONFIRMED, please... the problem is going on for a long time!!

Should this be fixed?

I just want to set a font like Trebuchet, I want it bold, and I want it coloured.
If I try to set it in the chat window from the Format Toolbar I have to set the font one thing at time.
So first I set the *bold* setting, then I write in the chat window, then I set the color, the settings remain the same for a while, then come back to regular sans serif with custom settings.

I'm using MSN protocol with latest Kopete on kde4 from openSuSE repository, please solve this. THANKS

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
