Description Olivier Fisette 2004-03-14 23:27:32 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

The "copy to" dialog that manages conflicts when copying files in a directory where there are already files with the same name is quite good : it offers to rename the file (and can suggest a new name), to overwrite, to always overwrite, to ignore, to always ignore and to cancel. These options should also be available in the move to dialog. Right now, you can only rename or overwrite. It is as if the dialog used when copying only one file was used many times over. It should be changed to have options to always overwrite, to ignore and to always ignore.

These dialogs incorporate previews, which is quite convenient. However, the window height sometime changes when loading a new preview. When copying or moving many files, this resizing is confusing, because the buttons are not always at the same place on the screen. I think all copy to and move to dialogs should have exactly the same size.

Also, when a preview is shown, the file size and date no longer are. This can be inconvenient.

It would also be nice to have a button to verify (using size and md5 checksum or byte-to-byte comparison) if the files are identical. This could be coupled to a checkbox offering to always make this comparison during the current copy/move operation if there is a name conflict.

Finally, it would be better if all conflicts were managed before starting the actual copy/move. On long file copy/move operations, the user would then not have to monitor the operation.

The first wish: adding "Auto skip" and "Overwrite all" buttons is something I find really important and would be very happy to have. There is imho no significant reason for the overwrite confirmation dialog when moving files to be any different from the overwrite confirmation dialog for copying files. I think the same dialog should be used in both situations.

I would really like to see this wishlist implemented, often I get files with similar names and want to know if its the same size (in bytes) and if it is binary the same.
Cheers

It would also be usefull to have a button for comparison if copying/moving textual files, using kompare or kdiff3 (or customizable).

This is much better in in KDE Frameworks 5.45 with Plasma 5.12.4.
