Version: 0.8.1 (using KDE 3.2.1, (testing/unstable)) Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 (Debian) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.4-rc2 Gaim has nice option allowing to determine if user wants to see contacts' nicknames in the tabs, or their UINs. It makes sense if you got lot of simultaneous conversations and use tabbed interface, as using UIN occupies less space per tab than when you use contact nick names, which is very handy
Better IMO to use a squezeed text ( LongNi... ) This should probably be done in kdelibs.
Better or not. Depends on taste. I recognize most numbers so I don't bother that much. All I want to achieve is to reduce tab size. It might be even better to have your option as another one or to be able to your UINS *and* squezzed text if UIN (or normal login, depending if UIN is enforced or not) is longer than X characters, as i.e. Jabber UIN are quite long as they are not numeric.
It also depends on protocol. The UIN (email address) of an MSN contact could very well be much longer than their alias. Same with a Jabber UIN.
Regardless, the choice of what is shown would be nice. I would especially like to get rid of the status part, but thats just me. being able to show just an icon, just a name, just the status, just the whatever, or any mix of them would be really nice. It would also be nice to have the options of tabs on the side, because sometimes, that area is bigger, and i could fit more there. I would like a universal sidebar-like system.
QT doesn't support tabs on the sides, not even in the upcoming 4.0, so that isn't going to happen any time soon.

I hate the fact that I there is status text in the tabs. I can see the status from the icons, the text is a huge waste of space. you could get rid of it completely imho, however, some may not like that, so an option somewhere would be great. I'm using 0.60.3 in kde 4.1.3
Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained. Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
