Description Bill Kendrick 2004-03-05 03:14:03 UTC
Version: 3.2 (using KDE 3.2.0, (3.0))
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.18-bf2.4

I installed and began using Kopete instant messenger. When I added new contacts, I usually asked it to connect them to addressbook entries, and would create new entries directly in Kopete. I eventually decided to go in and fill out the rest of the users' information (email, phone, etc.), but realized I didn't have the full KDE PIM package installed, so I installed that (Debian Woody package from KDE's own 3.2 builds).

When I launched KAddressBook for the first time, I saw all of the contacts I had made in Kopete. I edited one (added phone number, organization, title, and then finally category ("Business")).

Suddenly, that contact was the ONLY one in the addressbook. I finally discovered the "Filter" pulldown menu at the top (which showed the various categories, including "Business"). Unfortunately, even by making sure Filter was set to "None", none of the other contacts came back.

I checked the "std.vcf" file in my ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/, and it only had the one contact in there. Backup copies (std.vcf_1 through _7) existed, but the latest one was still days out of date. (I also assumed that the same 'wipe-out' would happen if I tried to edit a set of Kopete-entered contacts with KAddressBook again.)

Obviously, KAddressBook was able to read in the original VCF data created by Kopete. It'd be nice if it didn't erase it the minute I edited anything, though. ;^)

Also note that now while my Kopete contacts still show connection to the addressbook ("Has addressbook entry" is checked in the Properties dialog for a Kopete metacontact), they all seem to be empty, now. :^(

Thanks and good luck!

The development of the old KAddressBook will be discontinued for KDE 4.4.
Since the new application has the same name, but a completly new code base we close all bug reports against the old version and ask the submitters to resend there reports against the new product.
