Description Dan Allen 2004-02-29 20:53:21 UTC
Version: unknown (using KDE 3.1.0)
Installed from: Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker
Compiler: gcc version 3.2.2 (Mandrake Linux 9.1 3.2.2-3mdk)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.22-10mdk

In Konqueror, the "hjkl" keys can be used for scrolling and when combined with the SHIFT key, actually exhibit a smooth scroll feature (I love that feature!). However, not all of these keys work in correctly in the KMail preview pane, and I say "not correctly" since some of the keys work and others don't.

The "j" works fine, but then then the "k" selects all message in the message list. Hence, you can scroll down but not up. To remain consist, I would expect the keys that work the same in the preview pane of KMail as they do in Konqueror. Combined with the shortcut key for "Next Message", which is "n", a user could read mail without having to use the mouse at all once the preview pane had focus.

Hello Dan,

Thanks for your effort in checking bug reports and adding ideas and wishes.
However it doesn't help the small group of active developers if you "flood"
them with reports about the KMail versions in KDE 3.1.x. Could you please
try to switch to KDE 3.2? If you can check the reports against that version
(even better might be CVS HEAD in the moment) this would be much more help
for the KMail developer team.

Thank you for understanding.

Regards,
Andreas

I am actually using a newer version of KDE, 3.1.3 from Mandrake 9.2,
but my wife is using my computer so I am reporting from a Mandrake
9.1 computer. I know I really should be using KDE 3.2, but I just
haven't had a chance to upgrade yet...I just might do that today. I
heart konstruct is not too hard to work with, might give that a
whirl. I did however check the bug reports and found that some of
the bugs/features I am reporting still exist in HEAD, even though I
haven't actually used that version myself.

I partially figured out how to solve this problem. For one, I think that mapping the letter "K" to "Select All Message in Folder" is a bad idea as it breaks the existing global use of "K" which is to scroll to previous available text. With that letter unmapped in KMail (KDE 3.2) the message can now be scrolled up and down with the jk keys.

In KMail, there is a mapping for "next unread text" which is mapped to "SPACE", but there is not an coorelated one for "previous unread text" which would naturally map to "SHIFT-SPACE".

In short, take away the default mapping for "K" and add a mapping for "previous unread text" and set it as "SHIFT-SPACE" by default and this bug can be closed.

"K" is no longer bound to "Select all messages in folder" as of KDE 3.2. this leaves this as a wishlist for "Previous Unread Text"

I don't think "Previous Unread Text" crossing message borders makes sense. So this is basically a wish for configurable keybinding for scrolling up.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.
Comment 7 Luigi Toscano 2012-08-19 00:55:45 UTC
Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
