Description lrdefn 2004-02-08 22:23:05 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

This is a feature available in Gaim that I have yet to find in Kopete. Jumping between tabs via ALT+<tab number>. IE: ALT+1 would switch to the first tab, ALT+2 to the second, etc. It's a nifty addition.

ALT+Left and ALT+Right allows you to cycle through the chat tabs

Note you can also change this shortcut in configure shortcuts.

Comment 3 lrdefn 2004-02-08 23:11:26 UTC
Yeah, but a quick hop would be nicer, I think.. Left/Right might go over a window that's just received a message and clear the notification without you noticing. Also, I find that ALT+1 is slightly more ergonomic than ALT+Left. :)
Comment 4 Jason Keirstead 2004-02-09 00:23:36 UTC
I don't know if we would ever do this, it would mean making an unlimited # of KActions.

Comment 5 lrdefn 2004-02-09 00:42:50 UTC
Not sure how it would work from a coder's perspective since my coding experience is rather lackluster. From my understanding, it would require 10 keybinds, ALT+1 - ALT+0. I'm sure that if you have more than that amount of conversations, you'd have more sophisticated grouping..

Where exactly, Jason? Call me blind, but I don't see any there (and I should as I'd prefer to have CTRL-PgDn/PgUp as in Mozilla/Gaim and stuff)
Comment 7 Mike W 2004-03-15 22:16:39 UTC
in your chat window -> Settings -> Configure Shortcuts

the options you are looking for is Next Chat and Previous Chat.. i have mine to alt + right and alt + left respectively

this is ain't GNOME/Gtk app. ctrl+[left|right] or ctrl+( ']' | '[' ). (first
one works in chat window, second one is default in app like konqy).

I know this is an old entry, but I'd love to see Alt+1, Alt+2, etc. key bindings for tab navigation. I'm on KDE 3.4.1 right now, and they're still not available. Even if they're not sat by the default (although I'd think they should be), having them available would make using Kopete a LOT easier. Konqueror (as of 3.3, I believe) has the same bindings available, so it would be consistent.

Would it not make sense to make this KDE-wide? i.e. so that all KDE apps would use the shortcut for jumping to tab number x, you would tap the same key combination in all apps? It would seem to be the most KDE way of doing it, so to speak :)
Comment 12 Larry Garfield 2005-12-09 07:51:15 UTC
Yes, it would make sense to make it KDE-wide. I really don't understand why it isn't by now. It's not like KDE is new to the whole tabs game. :-)

If you agree, use your votes on this bug!

yeah, tabs have been bugging me lately- it seems every single program
uses different shortcuts to switch tabs. personally I like konsole's
behaviour best but I'd be happy with *any* sort of consistency...
Comment 14 Christof Schulze 2007-04-11 20:11:22 UTC
please, pretty please add the alt+<number> shortcut jump-to-tab. ctrl +, and ctr+. is bugging the hell out of me and its not convenient when having 4+ conversation tabs open at the same time.
firefox does it, konqueror does it, opera does it, even terminal does it. It would feel consistent to me even if that is only limited to the programs of my choice but it seems that a bunch of other people think so too.
Besides alt+ <left cursor> and alt + <right cursor> is used by some wm's for switching virtual desktops.

As it's already been said above- you can change the "Prev" and "Next shortcuts to anything you want.

As for the #0-9 - yes Konqueror and Konsole both have support for these, but at least in my Kubuntu install they are not enabled by default.

I agree this should totally be a KDE-wide tab setting, then all these apps wouldn't need to create 12 KActions for this stuff.
Comment 17 Larry Garfield 2007-04-11 22:51:17 UTC
Sure you can remap Next and Prev, but that's not the point. Next and Prev are useless when the rest of the tab-using world offers tab-by-number support. :-) That they are not enabled by default in Konqueror in some distros is, IMO, a bug against Konqueror and/or those distros.

A KDE-wide setting would be great, but unlikely to happen until KDE 4. A usability bug fix for Kopete, though, could potentially squeeze through in the next KDE 3.5.x bug fix release. Then the 4.x version of Kopete could just drop that for whatever KDE 4 standardizes on (and it should).
Comment 18 Larry Garfield 2009-03-26 05:59:26 UTC
This still doesn't appear to be available even in KDE 4.2. I really hate to be a nudge, but is it that hard to expose new tasks that shortcuts can be assigned to? Don't give it a default if you want, I can configure it myself, but an action for "jump to tab 1", "jump to tab 2", etc. is desperately needed.
Comment 19 Sam Rhys 2009-07-20 04:13:26 UTC
So this is still a big bug to me, as it doesn't follow other apps. Alt+# for switching between tabs is just sensible. I figure I would add how konsole does it, and maybe someone more familiar with QT and KDE UI's system can fix this.

Hope this helps.

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
