Current implementation gives little feedback for user. Why not remove root branch for all messages and add column for number of messages in thread (like in mutt or slrn) and draw tree only for current thread, not global for all messages in folder.

IMO it is better because gives information not only about existence of thread but also about its longevity.

Please look at the bug # 61891 where I suggested solution to threading 
issues.

Would be nice especially for browsing long threads of mailing lists. Also useful for regular correspondence.
