Description sean 2004-01-27 15:16:06 UTC
Version: 0.8.0 RC1 (using KDE 3.2.0 RC1, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.2 20031218 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.2-r5, propolice-3.3-7)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.22-gentoo-r2

Each time activity is detected, I'd prefer to be asked by Kopete if I would like to become available to others. Often I'll come to my workstation after it has idled, and several friends and colleagues will notice my availability and send a flurry of messages. This is useful if I'm going to be at my workstation for a long while, but if I'm checking in on something quick and leaving again then I must first respond to the flurry of messages with a "Sorry, I have to step out!" and this is time consuming.

I'm sure this would be useful for other folks too, especially business users. I'm sure some folks would tell me "Well, then turn off the automatic availability setting". The problem with this is then I would never remember to do make myself available! :)

Thanks for the awesome tool!

Sean.

You should either send yourself away before leaving or you should send yourself away immediately after you come back and get marked as "active"

Unfortunately Stefan that does not solve the problem.

As for sending myself away before leaving, that's not something I or the typical user will remember to do. If something draws you away from your workstation in a business environment, you do not usually have time to change the Away status in your IM client. In fact your IM client is the last thing on your mind.

As for sending myself away after coming back to the workstation, that sends the wrong message to my colleagues. First they see me as active, and then they see me quickly changed to "Away". I'm basically telling them that Yes I'm here but No I don't want to talk to you. This does not win friends and influence people positively.

But a messagebox is WAY too interruptive. I certainly don't want a messagebox just because I happened to move my mouse after a while to see what my system is doing :)
Maybe you should just turn off the checkbox that sets you online as soon as you're back at your place. Then _you_ decide when you want to go available again.

Then don't set the option to 'Ask'. I think this is a good idea. But it
requires care: if you say you want to stay away, then idle again, when you
come back it should pop up again IMO.

I know that I personally would forget to do this.

Richard is exactly right I'm not arguing for a change in the default behavior of Kopete, I'm just asking for an additional choice for the automatic away/availability option. In other words, adding "Ask" so that the options for this setting become [ ] Yes [ ] No [ ] Ask.
