Description soloturn99 2004-01-16 12:06:05 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.4)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

if imap connection breaks, a popup window comes tells the user about this. once broken, this popup window never goes away and you have to kill kmail.

normally, a popup-window is just displayed once (if you click refresh), or not at all (in automatic mode).

another possibility would be ot display a message box and go in offline mode when connection is broken. so the user can go in online mode whenever he wants.

Hello there. Thanks for taking the time to report this. Unfortunately I don't completely understand what the problem is. When my connection breaks I get a single popup which goes away when I acknowledge it.

Perhaps this bug has evolved and it can be looked at again, since there is still a basic problem with the way this is handled.

IMAP is a protocol that requires a fairly constant connection due to the fact that the messages are actually located on the remote host. Therefore, one has to imagine that there are going to be a lot of times when the connection is going in and out and kmail might fail to contact the IMAP server on one of those occations. I am positive it is not necessary to "interrupt" the user each time the connection doesn't ping. Most lesser experienced users are just going to be confused, thinking that something is wrong with KMail when in fact the internet connection may have just hiccupped.

I think it would be much better to queue these messages in the status bar with an exclamation point. Perhaps a threshold of queued messages would trigger a message box, but I still disagree that we want a blocking windows for this type of problem.

Please reconsider this bug.

After using KMail now for some time I have to say that this message box is getting downright unruly! I am on a wireless card and about once an hour the connection gets momentarily interrupted, a blip...perhaps a problem with the driver...but then I have to hear it from KMail. By the time I close the message window and query a message in my INBOX (IMAP) the connection is working again. Konqueror doesn't seem to have to tell me every time my connection blips, and neither should KMail.

I would much prefer to be able to specify that I don't want to receive this message anymore. It would be perfectly acceptable if this message is displayed when I click on "check messages" but it should be silenced for automatic message checking.

In summary, a user should be able to disable connection messages for automatic mail checking. It is acceptable to keep these messages for manual message checking.

Changing it to a wish as the behaviour itself is correct. I know this problem as my wifi connection also breaks sometimes. The best would be to notify the user once and then give him the choice to gather all further messages in a log. But this can only be done in the next version.
