Version: 2.01 (using KDE KDE 3.1.4) Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 20031229 (prerelease) (Debian) OS: Linux When you try to open a folder be it on the tape or on the archive when you click on the + sign, nothing is correctly displayed. Also, when you try to select a file by clicking the x option to verify or retry, it cannot be selected. => Kdat is not useable as is.

Kdat is useful for dumping randomly selected files from a file system. It is essentially a GUI for tar, and feeds the user selections to tar. I took over Kdat maintenance when it would not compile with a new release of KDE and the original maintainer was unavailable. I was able to get it to compile and it has done so properly since. Ever since I started using the original version of Kdat, it has not been able to read tapes or archives correctly. When I have time, I will try to find out why, but I have not had time to do so. I would suggest that Kdat is useful for dumping but not for reloading. As described in the popup window when the dump process is started, the Kdat dump can be reloaded with tar (since it is actually created by tar) by skipping for the first two files on the tape. I agree that Kdat is not useful for reloading archived files directly. In keeping with the premise of open software development, I invite any interested reader to identify the reason(s) Kdat isn't reading archives or tapes properly and to send me a patch that fixes the problem. I will be pleased to add reasonable patches (with full credit) to the distribution. - Larry Widman

What interest me is the other way : I dump and entire filesystem (e.g /home) and want to restore only selected files. Here GUI also is important. I can alway use tar with a list of file of course. > I took over Kdat maintenance when it would not compile with a new release of > KDE and the original maintainer was unavailable. Well when you say maintain, I would just says you hide the problems as it is not useable "as is" and should be removed from KDE distrib. If this happens then maybe other will try to come up with something. I tried taper, amanda, arkeai but found nothing realy convenient. I used also tapeware. > In keeping with the premise of open software development, I invite any > interested reader to identify the reason(s) Kdat isn't reading archives or > tapes properly and to send me a patch that fixes the problem. I was recently asked to review my oppened bugs. This bug get worse as time pass by because nobody maintains kdat allthough its functionnality are very needed for home user.
Kdat is not developed and mantained anymore. All Kdat bugs are closed with the status "unmantained".
