Description Casey Allen Shobe 2003-12-27 14:58:37 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

I believe this is the same bug originally reported in Bug 61223, if not in the original report, then certainly throughout the comments.

When an AIM user OR ICQ user messages me who is not on my list, I cannot see their online presence (and thus on AIM I have no way to message them). However I can add new AIM and ICQ users *just fine* without any problems.

This problem exists even after Bug 61223 is closed, with latest CVS, also tried Marcelo's BLM patch.

When any AIM or ICQ user not on my list messages me, I cannot see their online presence. On AIM, this means I cannot message them back. When I then right-click the contact and choose Add to Contact List, I still cannot see their online presence. With Marcelo's BLM patch, I can see their online presence *after* a newly-added ICQ user signs off and signs back on (not before), but it makes no difference whatsoever for AIM.
Comment 1 Casey Allen Shobe 2003-12-29 02:25:27 UTC
With Marcelo's BLM and GID patches applied, this problem is nearly eliminated. The only condition remaining is the ability to message temporary AIM contacts (everything else works)...so, this is nearly done.

A fix for AIM contacts should be coming soon now that I know a little bit more about how that part works.

You can now see ICQ temporary contacts and added to your list, and AIM contacts once adding them to your list.

All that's left to be done to close this bug is to add a Not Applicable status for AIM temporary contacts that allows sending messages, and that can wait until after 0.8.0 if necessary, IMHO.
Comment 5 Matt Rogers 2004-01-07 05:48:24 UTC
downgrading severity since it doesn't block a release anymore.

Why not use 'Unknown' instead? That status already exists and I assume it's
not too easy to add for AIM.

Either way, the KOS object that would be used would have to be equal to
online, but with a different icon or something to distinguish between
actually online and we can't know their status yet.

See my prior discussion. Unknown should be renamed to Not Applicable (or
something), and Unknown should be used for contacts when our account is
offline instead of Offline (since it is indeed unknown).

That's all a minor detail though - the point should be clear regardless.

People can be unknown when you are online as well
- You can't know the status of an unauthenticated AIM user
- You can't know the status of an SMS user

As such I think that Martijn is totally right, unknown is the correct status to
use in this case, its the exact same as SMS.

No Matt, you can send messages to someone marked as Unknown. That's why
it's different from Offline.

oh, cool. I was not aware of that. :) I'll play with an unknown status later
in the week.

1. ^^^^^^^^^^^^

> People can be unknown when you are online as well

*repeats my text that you quoted above* "See my prior discussion". I already
know this.

Right, and these should have the Not Applicable status. Unknown being
reserved for cases where it is impossible to know (they would both be Unknown
to the API, but with different names).

New temp-contacts appear as online for me with current Kopete. Was this fixed in the meantime or am I lucky? :)

Current status of this bug? Can it be closed?
Comment 14 Matt Rogers 2004-02-17 04:01:34 UTC
It's still there.
