Description Mohd Asif Ali Rizwaan 2003-12-19 21:22:14 UTC
Version: 1.1 (using KDE 3.1.3)
Installed from: Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.1 (Mandrake Linux 9.2 3.3.1-2mdk)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.22-10mdk

if you have 50 "recent documents links" in Recent Documents, then last file opened is the first in the list. Which is not so intuitive and rather cumbersome to see the recent document.

I propose a means of SORTING the "Recent Document Links" in few submenus in "Recent Documents" like:

All Last Accessed (current behavior) be placed in

1. Our Existing recent file list to be placed in a submenu called "All" or "Unsorted" or "Last Accessed"
K->Recent Documents->Unsorted->(current way of listing of Recent Documents links)

2. Our Sorted Recent Document Links should be sorted using:
   a. Type
   b. Name (Alphabetical 0-9,A-Z,a-z) (better to be case insensitive)
   c. Size
(just like Desktop Menu shows Icons->Sort Icons->By Name, by size, by Type)

   a. Sorted by Type
In Sorted by Type it is much easier to name "submenu name" as "file extention type", like:
      K->Recent Documents->Sorted By Type->txt
                                           mp3
                                           spec
                                           rpm
                                           ogg
                                           ktheme
                                           pdf
                                           ps
                                           tar
                                           unknown

Though the above submenus can be named using file pattern type which can be got from "kcmshell filetypes". But using Generic (filetype group) names like Audio,Video,Text,Images would be more appealing. like:
      K->Recent Documents->Sorted By Type->Audio
                                           Video
                                           Compressed
                                           Package
                                           Text
                                           Graphics/images/pictures
                                           Adobe PDF
                                           Themes
                                           Postscript
                                           WordProcessing
                                           Spreadsheet
                                           Spreadsheet
                                           Unknown
                                           etc...
You can get the Generic (Descriptive submenu names) from Mandrake 9.2's "/usr/share/applnk-mdk" subfolders.

Please note the BUG NO. 19039 had this in point 7. but that was not so clear and that was meant for KDE 1.x or 2.0. Here i elaborate it.

" 7. The Recent Documents Menu should automatically create (and remove) submenus like "Text" "Audio" "Pictures" "Video" etc. when it gets "text" "sound" "image" and/or "video" etc. files. This sorting will help the KDE user in easier access of recent documents. (option should be there in settings) "

I think this is a great idea. I don't find the recent documents list every useful because it quickly gets filled up with useless entries like music, etc.

Kicker is currently unmaintained, you can look to your distribution for help, however.
