Description Steven Adeff 2003-12-05 16:15:52 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.3)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs
OS: Linux

I noticed it first in KMail when saving an attachment, but I've had it happen in Konq also...
If you click to save a file, then change directories, then hit the enter key to save, it renames the filename trying to be saved as to an existing file name then asks if you want to over write the old one. It does not happen if you click ok instead of hitting enter.

I have a very similar problem...

When using the save as dialog, it is enevitable to click on an existing file that is not a directory.
the "Location" section gets filled in with the name of the file that I click, and then I am about to overwite an item!!!

Save As Dialog must be double click to change that file location section! single clicking is a part of moving the window!

anyway, this is extremely dangerous behavior, and I can confirm this bug for 3.2.1 on gentoo linux

I almost lost a lot of work, this should be chaged to critical -->places user in super dangerous position of loosing data.

Please upgrade to critical,

It is basically impossible for me to download anything with konqueror, because I can't save things in my home directory, I push the starting letter of the directory that I want to save the .zip file as.. and Oops, records becomes redit.txt or some other important file in my home directory.

my todo list has already been wiped out by this, and I'm sure a lot of other people have had this problem..

typing a letter normally (in every file manager that I've used) highlights the file that is in next in alphabetical order, including directories. It should not replace the file name of the file to write. That is what double clicking is for.

--Loss of productivity(takes many tries for my users to get the right directory to save in) --loss of data (selection of important files to overwite)

If there is an option to change this behavior, please make it default / easy to find.

Thanks..
This is a blocker/critical issue

overwrite files if clicked on an item in the save as dialog, should be double click to select

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255602

The folks at mozilla have the same type bug... The problem is that they think it's a feature to overwrite a weeks worth of work just by having a cat walk by at the wrong time!!!

MORE ACCESSABILITY TO THE KITTENS is what you're saying if this bug doesn't get fixed..

Hi, this bug is still present in kde 4.1

Ideal behavior is that if a file is clicked in the save as dialog box, NOTHING changes. The filename should NOT be changed to match the one that is clicked, and the worse behavior of KDE where it just moves along straight to the warning message is HORRIBLE.

Overwrite should not be default.

Please confirm.

1) I cannot reproduce the original bug description in KDE 4.1.1

2) What you are saying Aaron is not the correct behavior for me. In the "save as" dialog it should be single click on a file to change the "Location:" line to the selected file. However, I understand that this might not be the desired behavior for all users, so imho this could be made an option. So, this is not critical, just a wishlist item :)

3) In KDE 4, the save as dialog actually goes straight to the overwrite confirmation after you click on a file, which I agree is horrible, but this is another bug report (bug 170979).

4) While experimenting, I noticed a similar minor issue. If you select somehow a directory and then hit enter, the file is saved inside that selected directory (enter in fact opens the directory first and then saves the file. I think this keypress signal should not be connected to both actions)

Moving from "kio/kfile" component to "kfile" product, helps sorting out duplicates.

Same as George: works for me/behaves as intended. If you don't want things to happen on single-click, change the click setting in System Settings > Input Devices > Mouse.
