Description S. Burmeister 2003-11-26 23:48:22 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.4)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

It would be a very handy feature, if one was able to mount iso-images and similar files from within konqueror, i.e. by right-clicking and picking mount this file from the context menu.

Same approach could be taken for mounting smb-shares.
Comment 1 Stephan Kulow 2003-11-27 11:55:29 UTC
mounting under UNIX requires root rights and konqueror is explicitly made for non-root.

If you want to mount something regulary, add it to /etc/fstab with option user and then you can create a device link in konqueror.

Re-opening, as the argument is NOT true! If I click on a rpm there appears a button asking me whether I want to install that package with Yast which definitely requires root rights.
So this is a feature to faciliate something as for the rpm installation which could also be done using the command line.

YaST is not a part of KDE. I was going to write the same thing for this bug report, but I decided against it, since we do have some things that ask you for a root password (see the Administrator button in kcontrol).

However, as he noted it, none of those are in Konqueror.

I am re-closing this bug report. Please don't reopen a WONTFIX bug report unless you are willing to fix it yourself (i.e., write the code).

Could you provide some hints on howtos especially for these kind of add-ons. Maybe even the package the suse thingy is in, in order to have a look at the source code.
I had a look at the kde pages but could not find any hint reagarding this special kind of program.

Ta!

you need to start from scratch. I forgot about the root password thingy - as I don't consider it convenient.

I think it would be a very useful feature if an ISO-image would be treated like a folder (read only,of course). This would improve user-experience a LOT! That may not be obvious from a technical point of view, but in the users eyes ("ok, I have this object here - lets look what's inside of it..." ...like it works for any other kind of object)
After all this is the way, OSX handels it, I think.
I have no idea, whether this would be possible to implement, but it would be a step to a more consistent and easier userinterface.

I'm a Mac OS X user (and a Windows and of course Linux user too).

When I click on a .dmg (image disk... a sort of iso) the file is automaticaly mounted in the Finder (a sort of Konqueror...)
No root password I asked...
That is a very usefull feature !!!!

See for example
http://www.xpertmart.com/Manual/Manual_images/install_Mac_DMG_Install.jpg

You can see on the left an icon called Xpert_Mart_OSXInstall this is in fact a dmg file that has been mounted on the system.

If I want to unmount it I only need to click on the eject button.

Providing such a feature in Konqueror will be very usefull !

Regards

We can mount smb or access them unmounted to this wish is only amount ISO now, which is also covered by wish #66375

Where do we have this feature in konqueror? I can't find it, I'm using the latest stable KDE, version 3.5.4. Sure, I can access a smb share unmounted via the kioslave, but I think the original wish goes in the direction of having a mount-option in the context menu of konqueror.
Or did I forget to install a special package handling this? Please check if you can mount a smb share shown by the smb-kioslave with konqueror's context menu. If you cannot it would be nice to reopen the report.

Forward-duping to Bug 175051 since there's less distracting argumentation in there. Yes, it's a legitimate (and much-requested) feature, and we should and eventually will implement it.
