Description Arnaud 2003-11-11 16:13:28 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.93)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs

I find the default behaviour of the search sub folder in the folder view a bit confusing and un natural.
I don't expect having the result of my last search in a folder after a kmail restart.
2 ways to go :
1/ Reset the folder at kmail close,
or
2/ Rename then search sub folder with the parameters which lead to the listed results.

Just because you don't like this doesn't mean it's a bug.

cool down, Yes I should have labeled it as a whish,
but I keep my opinion on the oddnes of this behaviour, 'cause,
having the results of a search you made 3 days ago, not knowing the
parameters of the search, is indeed confusing.

Actually I do also think that this is a bug and somehow against the functionality of search folders. BUT instead of erasing results (maybe for the "recent results" this might be sensible) search-folders should update their content triggered by certain events such as new mail arriving but at a minimum after kmail is restarted. People who set up search folders do this for a reason which is not a one off search but a kind of filter, e.g. to view just new/unread email in a folder. Thus having to perform a new search everytime one wants to have an updated folder seems to be a buggy behaviour.

Except for status searches search folders are updated by such 'events'. Try it, I don't know of any significant outstanding bugs. If you can find a bug please take the time to fill out a detailed bug report describing how to reproduce it.

While I don't object to the preservation of the last search over a KMail restart, I do object to the fact that the search is done again. My last search was one in all local folders, and I have well over 20000 messages in total. The search takes ages and makes KMail sluggish when I first start it. I couldn't find anything in the options to disable this behaviour. Please let me know if there is an option that I'm missing. Otherwise my wish is for such an option to be added, and either for the last search to be lost by default or for the last search to be saved and reloaded instead of recomputed.

KMail 1.6.2 (Using KDE 3.2.3)
MEPIS Linux RC1, July 12, 2004

I've been using the latest KMail for about a week after upgrading from an ancient version. Last night I ran my first search, found several messages from the same person, and responded to one of them.

This morning, she'd sent a reply but I had to look hard for it. It went to the "Last Search" folder instead of my Inbox. (I knew something had arrived because I received the "New Mail" notification when I turned on my computer.)

Then I couldn't move the messages found by last night's search back to my Inbox. After drag-and-dropo, or right-click/Move To, every time I closed and opened KMail the messages were back in the Last Search folder instead of the Inbox.

Resolved that by hitting Clear and running a new search. But this morning's message still doesn't appear in my Inbox. I'ts there somewhere; Tools>Find Messages says its in my Inbox.

The earlier version of KMail was the best e-mail program I've ever used and this one, in general, seems even better. But am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to disable saving searches?

Search folders, don't actually contain a copy of messages. Rather they
just link to messages in other folders.

So it's not possible for a message to only be in the 'Last Search"
folder, as it must also be in some other (normal) folder.

If the message is already in the inbox then "drag-and-dropo, or
right-click/Move To" from a search folder to the inbox will do
nothing.

In the "Tools>Find Messages" search window double click on a message
then switch back to the main window, the message should now be
displayed in the main window.

You can delete a search folder. In the version of KMail about to be
released the 'Last Search' folder is deleted when KMail starts.

I think when you selected the 'Last Search' folder when new mail
arrived, the new message was marked as read and maybe this made it
difficult to see it in the inbox folder.

delete 'Last Search' done + the rest

So I'm considering this fix as long no one states the opposite.
