Description flstcboy 2003-09-08 04:00:47 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.3)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

Attention, this is not related to the (closed/fixed) bug No. "57390" !

It is very useful to sort the files "by Type" in the file-list.
Currently there is only the Sort-option:
"by Name"
"by Date"
"by Size"

Please add a "by Type" option.
Actually, this option is also appreciated and very useful in ALL "Open File" Dialogs.

Thanks very much.

Isn't this a consequence of the underlying problem behind Bug #58777?
Comment 2 flstcboy 2003-09-11 02:42:31 UTC
i think, this bug is something diffrent, sure, it is about the same dialog, and
i also was searching for more functionality in the context-menu i.e.
(copy/delete/rename File) but. this bug is specially about the feature to sort
"by Type". the Sorting feature is already present, but it really needs this new
option "sort by Type", then you can sort and find files much easier in the
open/save dialog, especially if you don't know the name of the file you are
looking for. (Usually people also don't know the Size or date, when save saved
a file before) So, sorting by type brings much usability if a folder contains
many file types. with the new search option, there should also be shown the
"filetype" as colum, just besides the name, date or size colum.
if i would close this wishlist, i think the idea could be lost if the actually
other wishlist will be closed. and there is nothing mentioned about an
additional Sorting-Option (like Konqueror already has).

thanks

I'm under the impression that the underlying problem is libkonq being a lib
but not being in kdelibs hence the file dialog file views are inconsistent
with the Konqueror ones (I'm guessing here; will look at it for KDE 4 since I
want to fix this). Just plugging a file type field into the dialog feels
like a half baked solution. Also KDE has its own magic system as well ...

Why do you close this report? "yup"?
Comment 8 Stephan Binner 2005-01-18 18:30:11 UTC
I see no reason to close it, it has also votes of others.
Comment 9 flstcboy 2005-01-24 12:43:14 UTC
oh, sorry, it was misunderstanding, i thought, this one was a duplicate of another bug, but it was the other way :)

I am shocked that this is not there! I thought it was, but since I use both Windows and Linux every day, I must have just remembered it from the windows dialogs. This *must* be fixed! It is a terribly annoying bug!

I hope "by type" option will come to KDE4. I have many different files always on directories and finding SVG file from many other filetypes, is harder when doing simple job like changing wallpaper.. (if not draggin image to desktop)...
