Description coolian 2003-07-24 19:03:58 UTC
Version: 2.2.1 (using KDE 3.1.0)
Installed from: Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker
Compiler: gcc version 3.2.2 (Mandrake Linux 9.1 3.2.2-3mdk)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.21-0.13mdkenterprise

Just like the "Fuzzy Clock", the Noatun volume control could be set in relative sound levels...Instead of "Low to High", there could be "Library" to "Rock Launch". See more info at <A HREF="http://www.lhh.org/noise/decibel.htm">Relative Decibel levels</A>

Also, there should be a way to actually limit the sound levels with regard to normalization, like in <A HREF="http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44726">bug# 44726</A>. I want to be able to guarantee that when listening to the Beatles then switch to Metallica, my girlfriend won't wake up beside me.

Also, I looked at Smoove. It's not really very current, and this should be integrated into KDE.

Make use of effects: The Synth_STEREO_COMPRESSOR is exactly what you want!

Something user-configurable? Just went through the standard interface for KDE
3.1 Noatun, and saw zilch.

Menu "Settings" / "Effects", from there insert the Compressor and click on the
button with gripper to show its gui.

There's a program called normalize (http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~cvaill/normalize/), which comes with an effects plugin for xmms called xmms-rva. normalize crunches mp3s and determines an RVA (Relative Volume Adjustment) which is added as a standardized tag to the mp3 file.

Though dated, this is probably the best way to handle normalization

amaroK should honor RVA tags.

noatun has not been part of the KDE 4 release and is no longer maintained.

KDE now offers Dragon as a video player and JuK as a music player. Additionally, other popular KDE players have been ported to KDE 4, such as Amarok or Kaffeine.

If this issue is still applicable to KDE 4 applications, please add a comment or file a new report.
