Version: unknown (using KDE 3.1.1) Installed from: SuSE Compiler: gcc version 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20-4GB IMHO the time has come to remove the spinning K wheel / gear. - There is already quite a lot of progress information (busy mouse cursor, status line) - It is completely non-standard as KDE gui, no other app has a symbol like this while it is busy - Those animated logos have been created at a time when people were not used to network applications that may need a few seconds to respond, and to show them that they have not crashed (yet :) - The current implementation has various problems, e.g. it freezes while rendering complicated things or loading plugins - Other, newer browsers don't have it (Safari, Mozilla Firebird) - And last, but not least, the design is outdated and doesnt fit into the the current themes. So it should be at least replaced (And if you don't like the request at all, a possible alternative would be a small animation in the place of the favicon while the page is loading)
i like the animated favicons idea a *lot*
I liked the animated favicons idea, but the spinner is a real must for people on dialup or otherwise connections that are crappy. Often times, using dialup, my connection to a server stalls and eventually times out, using the spinner, I can see if the connection to the server is still up. It's a valuable piece of information. However, if favicons were animated, I could easily part with the spinner.
<rant> Btw that gear is called "Throbber" ;) . Second konqueror status line is usually misleading / not enough updated ( ala I miss Netscape4 statusbar ). And animated favicons would be cool :) </rant>
You could instead add a "progress bar" next to the status line , I believe internet explorer has this, its very cool. Another thing one could do is add a progress bar in tabs, like mozilla with those cool tab plugins.. Well and you could.... ok ok ok :)) sometimes I forget it isn't easy to put these things in. Anyways, congrats kde developers, you are open-source heroes (literally, it amazes me how much kde has grown all due to your hard work, thanks people, you're beautifull).
Konqueror has a progress bar on the status line. New Internet Explorers do not have a status line (at least by default).
Another idea would just be to remove the throbber and status bar in favor of showing the progress in the location bar, like in safari.
Just wanted to mention, that differently to what was said about other new browsers, Firefox has also a similar "rotating" image, and AFAIK MS-IE uses an animated win logo.
By the time bug was filled Firefox wouldn't put throbber ( rotating image ) on by default.
The report is questionable because animated logo is very useful to a lot of people. Besides I don't see how it does not fit to modern UI, KDE design, or anything like this. But also this report is INVALID -- you don't like animated logo, fine, remove it from toolbar. That the settings are for.

The throbber can be removed. So this bug can be considered as closed.
