Description Bernd Zimmer 2003-06-20 12:35:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.2)
Installed from: Debian stable Packages
OS: Linux

AOL in Germany e.g. will launch a service called IM2SMS
That means that AOL members using AOL 8.0, which will be launched in 2 or 3 month, have the possibility to forward incoming IMs to their mobile phones as SMS.
The Buddylist in the AOL client has a special icon which displays to the sender that the receipient is not online but will get the message on a mobile device.
It would be cool if Kopete would support that feature as well. I believe that gaim 0.64 does support the feature.

Since Kopete already supports SMS, the best way to do this would be to implement
that generic forwarding plugin that was talked about awhile ago.
Comment 2 Matt Rogers 2004-01-02 07:26:55 UTC
possibly, but AIM (in their lastest beta) has the IM Forwarding feature mentioned, and it's all handled by their servers.
Comment 3 Casey Allen Shobe 2004-01-02 08:27:20 UTC
Supporting the option via the AIM server is best, because usage of the SMS plugin:

A> requires an SMS account subscription ($) in order to send a message to the recipient (most people do not have one).

B> is significantly more difficult to set up.

But the special icon for mobile users has been in AIM for ages (I had a friend that used it as their primary form of AIM 2 years ago). Is this wish one and the same with that functionality, and does Kopete currently have the ability to message these users, sans the special icon?

Not necessarily.

Ideally the SMS plugin handles the SMS sending through a number of transports,
one of which could be the AIM plugin. It only requires some inter-plugin
communication to work. MSN already has this in the netmeeting plugin, so it
for sure can be done :)

That said, I don't know how the integration works, so I don't know if it's
better or worse usability to add a second KopeteContact to a meta contact
with a user's mobile phone number. Casey, you are actually using AIM, also
the official client. Any idea if integrating it with the SMS plugin would
work out, GUI-wise?

If this feature would be documented it could be added. I haven't seen any information about an sms forwarding yet, sure it would be interesting to add though.

I am not sure if any progress has been made on this bug but I would like to note that Gaim version 1.1.0 does have this feature. They use a slightly different icon to note a mobile device user. I am looking to see if they have any development documentation on this functionality.
Comment 9 Sean Lynch 2005-02-12 20:26:27 UTC
I too would like to see the icon distinction as to many times I've sent a message to a user thinking he was online when in fact he was just forwarding his messages to his phone.

If you have the Client Features field on tooltip it will show mobile users as Mobile AIM client so it looks that the detection is there, the icon just needs to have a phone insignia on it (kinda like the click for away users)

Typos... man I wish you could modify comments on b.k.o. Should be clock, not click.
Comment 14 Dan Berger 2005-08-10 07:01:31 UTC
Furthermore, it would be nice if Kopete stopped automatically changing your buddy's name to "ICQ Web/Mobile Express" when you send him/her an IM that goes to their mobile device.
Comment 15 Matt Rogers 2005-08-10 14:06:11 UTC
that's a seperate bug

Hi, sorry for the bad news, but AIM was discontinued last year, so I will be closing this bug.

Thank you for helping us make KDE software even better for everyone!
