Version: unknown (using KDE 3.1.9) Compiler: gcc version 3.2.3 20030422 (Gentoo Linux 1.4 3.2.3-r1, propolice) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20-gentoo-r5 When I used to use Windows, and I wanted to see as many files as possible I used List view which is the equivalent to Konq's MultiColumn view. However, under List view there existed unnamed column headers which one could use to resize certain columns. For example if a column contains a list of files with names starting with the same string it is useful to resize that column to see the expanded name to make an exact selection. Currently under MultiColumn all columns are of equal size and unresizeable.
The text is word-wrapped, so you can see it all. At least in HEAD. Can you give us a screenshot of the problem?

What is needed is a header with resize handles at the top ( just like detailed list view, but without any text in the headers and no categories ) Created an attachment (id=1651) snapshot1.png

I cannot reproduce this. Maybe it's been fixed. In my Konqueror, it automatically resizes so that all text is visible.
On KDE 3.2.1 (Debian Unstable) I certainly can reproduces this and would like some kind of a fix too - automatically resizing the column to fit the longest currently listed filename would be good enough for me but haven't seen this yet with konqueror.
Please mark this bug as duplicate to bug #42587 I would ask the voters for this bug to move their votes to that bug. Thanks.
Adding a resize handle is not a good idea. At least if the icon size is small and the file name is displayed in 1 row, the size of the column should be dynamic. @Peter: could this be interesting? (even this time I'm sorry... there are some old bugs/wishes which could be applicable to KDE 4 too)
@FiNeX: I agree that a resize handle seems to be no good idea, but a dynamic resizing might be an option. It's OK to move this wish to Dolphin.
@Peter: Ok. Moved to dolphin and changed the summary.

Created attachment 53033 [details] Nautilus compact view enough space for each column so that all file name text is visible
+1 for this wish. It is a very desirable feature.
If I tweak the icon view of dolphin I get the required view. But I want it to be added as separate view and with variable column field. See the attachments: https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=53043 https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=53804
Setting up following setting for "Icons" view mode of the Dolphin gives the required view: Arrangement: Columns (yes that's it, rest are just user parameters) But it would be preferred if it were a separate view mode, as viewing all folder like this is not liked. I don't think its difficult to add. My very humble appeal to the develops to please include this.
