Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.1) Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages The "Maximum File Size" setting should not affect previews when the thumbnail is already embedded in the file, as is the case with JPEG images coming digital cameras. This is because we don't spend any time generating the thumbnail so the file size makes no difference.
I second this. This would be a plus.
Thired it this is a real issue with Open Document files as well as JPG and (shameless plug) the klik project (http://klik.atekon.de/)
Yes -- klik *.cmg files have already experimental support for embedded icons specific to the application. klik thumbnails are currently added to the *.cmg by using "ar" to glue them to the file. You can see this with the very small <a href="klik://xvier">klik://xvier</a> test file for example. But very often, a klik *.cmg is much bigger than 3 MByte. (OpenOffice 2 is 112 MByte in the shape of the single "ooo2.cmg" -- while as RPMs it takes a good 300 MByte of space). If you want to see what is currently cooking within the klik project, see this URL: http://klik.atekon.de/wiki/index.php/KDE_Thumbnails
I'm going to have to agree with this since from what I've read about extended attributes, you can embed the icon similarly to the Mac HFS resource fork. This means that files that are larger than 3 MB will be unable to display the embedded thumbnail since the default is FAR too small. While it is limited to 100MB at the top end of the configuration option, size of the file for embedded thumbnails should NOT be affected.

I just finished a klik2 thumbnail plugin that extract an icon from a cmg file (in fact, an iso file) which contains an application. Since this operation is not relying on the size of the file (cost the same to extract a file from a 1Mo or from a 100Mo file), that will be really annoying to ask people to increase the "Maximum File Size" attribute since that impact all the other thumbnailers. A simple option into the desktop file could solve the problem when the thumbnail is already embedded into the file.
