Description chris 2003-04-08 18:03:26 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
Compiler: gcc-2.96-rh
OS: Linux

When forwarding spam to an abuse address, I switch between fancy headers and complete headers. I usually use forward/inline to forward the email. Usually, this causes the full headers to be included in the forwarded message. Sometimes, kmail gets in a state where it will only include brief headers. When this happens, I have to restart kmail to get it to include full headers again. This is with IMAP email.

IMO, if you want to preserve headers when forwarding email, you ought to use the "forward
as attachment" option. (though ironically, I recently discoverred that abuse@hotmail.com
automatically drops any received mail that contains attachments, *sigh*...)

Though, I can confirm the original bug, kde-3.1.1, redhat 7.3.

What I see is this: forward->inline will always use the header type that was in place when
kmail was originally launched. If kmail was launched with headers->Full, then forward->inline
will always use full headers, regardless of changing that option later.

Note that forwarding as an attachment is not a good solution to reporting spam. As you discovered, many ISPs automatically dump any emails with attachments. It's not just Hotmail. We need an easy way to forward attachments inline with full headers, and kmail simply isn't doing this reliably.

I guess this happens when you change the header display strategy during a session, since it is only written on KMail shutdown, that config value, so the old value from the config file is read and used to determine what headers to insert, thereby using out of date information. I'll fix this by porting the option to KConfigXT, which keeps state in memory, but I need to talk to Ingo about where to put it.

For what its worth, I'm using Kmail 1.7.1 with Mandrake 10.1 and as stated above, if long headers are selected in the view menu on startup only long headers will be shown no matter what I do, if I select full headers, shut down, restart Kmail full headers will be shown with a forward either in-line or as an attachment.

As far as I can tell, KMail trunk r881868 always uses the same short header style for forwarding. For forwarding mails to an abuse list you should be able to either use the "Redirect" feature or specify a custom template which contains all headers. I think this can be considered fixed.

Then let's close it.
