Description nagytam 2003-03-31 17:21:28 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

Using libpst would allow to import Outlook PST files. A small interface code in KMail (KMailCVT) would probably be fairly easy to develop...

LibPST: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ol2mbox

This project provides libraries and applications for the conversion of Outlook
and Outlook Express data files to Linux MBOX format. The flagship of this
project is LibPST which converts Outlook files, LibDB

Debian seems to have a newer version: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/source/libpst

I believe I tried this some time ago. It worked, AFAIR, apart from the sad fact that it didn't go into subfolders.

libpst (now at http://alioth.debian.org/projects/libpst/, apparently) can produce KMail compatible directory / files (using readpst, with the -k option). Is there anything to be gained by doing kmailcvt as well?

It's clear that it's realy needed especialy in a company where you have dual boot systems and users stores their e-mails localy on windows side. Many of thems are not geeks and have few skills regarding command line (and thanks to KDE, such users are able to take benefits from Linux).

Having KMail able to handle PST files would be awesome.
Comment 6 Brad Hards 2005-01-16 05:12:36 UTC
I don't think that is the same thing. If you are dual-booting, you really don't want to import. You want to work native. So I don't think that adding kmailcvt support is going to help with this case.

It might make sense to add native (as in, KMFolderIndex subclass and FolderJob subclass) support for PST files.

to #4: I work currently on a port of the functionality of readpst -k to kmailcvt by using libpst for Outlook <= 2002 (2003 isn't supported currently).

to #6: I'm not sure, but I think libpst can only read from PST-file. I think there is currently no support for write to PST-files. Make it sense in this case to add native support for PST-files?
Comment 9 Olivier LAHAYE 2006-10-25 17:41:41 UTC
As a sysadmin, PST is a real headache for me. My linux users needs VMWare to read their PST files! Having the ability to work with native PST within KDE (even if PST is the worst format ever created) would help many linux users within big company IMHO.

So yes, native PST support would be realy cool :-)

I don't have any C++ programming sckills, but I can try to help by testing.

Assigning back bugs that weren't taken care of to kdepim-bugs.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.
Comment 14 Luigi Toscano 2012-08-19 01:03:54 UTC
Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
Comment 15 Wulf C. Krueger 2012-08-19 10:30:32 UTC
This would still be very, very useful for me and most likely a lot of other "wanderers between the worlds".
