Description Brad Coupe 2003-02-18 23:36:17 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1KDE 3.0.3)
Installed from: RedHat RPMsRedHat RPMs
OS: Linux

I feel silly reporting this as a bug, but I'm not sure what else to do.

I noticed today that some of my mail folders are listing their contents as "No Subject" and "Unknown" sender and date. These are not folders that I open every day, so I don't know if the problem happend today or sometime earlier. However, I did copy (not cut) my ~/Mail directory elsewhere (to back it up) today. I did some snooping, and it seems that the only folders that do this are those in maildir format. All of my folders in mbox format seem to be ok. I'm not sure why I have folders in both maildir and mbox format but I do (I suspect it is something I did incorrectly).

I've done some searching in your bug files, and found similar things but not how to fix them. It sounds like the index files are no longer in sync. I tried closeing Kmail, moving the .folder.index* fles to another directory and then reopening Kmail, but that didn't fix it.

I get the impression that the data are still there somewhere, as Kmail indicates whether or not I have replied to the message etc, but I just can't read it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Brad

Are you sure you moved the right index files?
"No Subject" "Unknown" messages usually only appear if there are some
messages listed in the index that don't exist anymore (e.g. because
they have been deleted/moved). If the index is really regenerated they
should be gone.

I guess I'm not sure if I moved the right ones or not, but I put them
back after it didn't work, so in the end nothing has changed. Initially,
the subject and sender information was correct, but when I clicked on
the message to display it they switched to "No Subject" and "Unknown".
It is likely that I'm doing the wrong thing to fix it (clearly as it is
not working). Which index files should I be moving?

I think part of your email must not have made it through. Could you
explain which files should be moved?

Thanks,

Brad

Assuming that the toplevel folder abc is affected then you should
(re)move ~/Mail/.abc.index* .
Assuming that the subfolder def of the toplevel folder abc is affected
then you should (re)move ~/Mail/.abc.directory/.def.index* .

Brad, is this issue resolved for you now? I assume deleting the right index files fixed it?
Comment 7 Brad Coupe 2003-06-30 22:36:41 UTC
Hi,

Unfortunately, after removing the index files, I still don't have the missing
messages. I assume that they are gone for good, and have given up looking for
them, although any additional suggestions would be welcome.

All the best,

Brad

This sounds somewhat like my problem. I get "no subject" in the subject line and
"unknown" in the sender and date positions and then the text is just a large set of
alphanumeric symbols. This often happens to old messages and occurs when I click on
the line in the index.

Hi

I've just been trawling the archives to try and resolve a very similar problem. I relaise that
this thread has been around for a few months, but cannot find a resolution.

I have just upgraded from Suse8.0 to Suse Desktop Linux and seems as though this
included and upgrade to KDE and thus Kmail (1.5.1). I don't know what version I was using
before.

Since the upgrade, I am getting very similar symptoms - also noticing that folders that are
held in mbox format seem fine, but those maildir format are showing "Unknown" "No
Subject" and a message size of zero.

No idea why some are in maildir format anyway - could it be something to do with having
been imported?

Many thanks
