Description David McNab 2003-02-06 08:03:28 UTC
Version: unknown (using KDE 3.1.0 (RC6))
Installed from: (sid)
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20-pre9

It feels impractical to me to have tabs running horizontally along the top, because tabs are very wide compared to their height. With this horizontal alignment, only about 6-8 tabs are visible at any one time. Also, the scroilling of tabs feels awkward.

It would be great if there was an option to run the tabs vertically down the left of the window - that way, up to 20 or more tabs can be visible simultaneously. Sure, some screen real-estate would be wasted if few tabs are showing, but this would be more than compensated by easier navigation between tabs when there's a lot of them.

Another nice thing would be if the tabs bar could be detached, just like the location bar, bookmarks bar, nav bar etc. But that's not as important to me as the ability to have the tabs vertically arranged. But perhaps there's a way to kill 2 birds with one stone - a detachable tabs bar that arranges itself vertically or horizontally, depending on where in the window the user attaches it.

Apart from that - congrats to all of you on how Konqueror is coming on. It's truly on its way to becoming a Mozilla-killer!

Cheers
David

I would prefer to have a "tab list" toolbar button, something like window list button
on kicker's taskbar. This would save the screen space and we could jump to any
tab without scrolling, also I think it would be easier to implement.
Another solution, is to make tab size adaptive to width of the window, like in mozilla
(http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48393 ).

I wouldn't mind just being able to array the tabs along the bottom.

This feature is a must-have. Opera and galeon do it, and I'm waiting for konqueror
to add this in order to use it instead of opera...

 CU!
Comment 5 Stephan Binner 2003-06-02 11:32:02 UTC
This will likely not happen if Trolltech doesn't add support for this to
QTabWidget.
Comment 6 Alejandro Exojo 2003-07-27 17:36:00 UTC
Hello.

I'm also interested in voting this feature. As Stephan Binner said, it won't be supported if
Qt doesn't support some features in QTabWidget, cause actually only supports top and
bottom position (http://doc.trolltech.com/3.2/qtabwidget.html#tabPosition-prop).

Looking at TrollTech's documentation, the only way to report bugs, seems
qt-bugs@trolltech.com, but it doesn't specifies if feature requests are allowed. Anyway,
I'm CC to them, because in kde's bugzilla, I don't see *any* bug submitted against Qt.

Best regards.

Vertical tabs are also great for browsing on laptops with wide-aspect screens (such as 1280 x 600). I had to give this feature up when I left Galeon and always miss it.

We have marked this as a feature request and we will consider this for a
future release of Qt. Thanks for the suggestion!

I don't see vertical feature even in http://doc.trolltech.com/4.0/qtabwidget.html .

Couldn't tab panel be implemented like kicker(maybe witch childs..) position?
Comment 11 Andrius Kazimieras Kasparavičius 2004-10-14 23:06:26 UTC
silence :) it's impossible to work in good mood with scrooling horizontal tabs with konsole or especially konversation-multiple servers. Nothing found in 3.4 roadmap. Any predictions? :)

Hi

I have forwarded the request to the responsible developer. I am afraid I
have no estimate or even confirmation that this is going to happen atm.

best regards

Just discovered it in the Qt 4 Beta 2 snapshots. Thank you. :-)
Comment 14 David Broome 2008-09-02 02:17:27 UTC
If this is in QT 4 now, any chance of seeing this in Konqueror?
Comment 15 FiNeX 2008-11-16 20:32:45 UTC
@David: do you mean vertical tab only on konqueror or in all kde apps?

Seems that QT don't have and don't want to developing

not multi-line tab bar like here: http://images3.download.ru/images/reviews/qip.jpg

not vertical-aligned tab bar like here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/vertical-tabs/

But without this feature Kopete chat dialog goes unusable! Look at the screenshots: http://wstaw.org/m/2011/10/24/plasma-desktopQ19118.jpg
http://wstaw.org/m/2011/10/24/plasma-desktopv19118.jpg

So, maybe we can without waiting QT reuse some KDE library for this?

I try to search in current KDE apps:

For example, somethink like vertical tabs done in Kontact: http://wstaw.org/m/2011/11/02/plasma-desktopKB9066.jpg

This is example from kate: http://wstaw.org/m/2011/11/02/plasma-desktopKP9066.jpg

Here is another example for Kate: http://kate-editor.org/2011/04/25/kates-tab-bar-plugins/
Comment 19 Murz 2011-11-02 06:20:48 UTC
And here http://www.qtforum.org/article/28672/how-to-change-qtabwidget-s-tab-positon.html I have found the NTabWidget that do this.
Comment 20 Murz 2011-11-02 06:58:16 UTC
I fill feature request for multi-row tabs in QT here https://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-22487
and for vertical tabs here: https://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-22488

Please vote and comment them.
Comment 21 Murz 2013-07-29 11:40:35 UTC
Similar issues with same problem on other apps:
KDE Telepathy multirow tabs: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298961#c0
KTP: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=308059

So please vote for this issues too .
Comment 22 Christoph Cullmann 2024-09-14 16:17:40 UTC
Hi,

kdelibs (version 4 and earlier) is no longer maintained since a few years.

KDE Frameworks 5 or 6 might already have implemented this wish.

If not, please re-open against the matching framework if feasible or against the application that shows the issue.

We then can still dispatch it to the right Bugzilla product or component.

Greetings
Christoph Cullmann
