Description wilbert 2003-01-19 20:16:25 UTC
Version: 3.1 (using KDE 3.1.0 (RC6))
Installed from: Gentoo
Compiler: gcc version 3.2.1
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20

Hi,

In the KMail help docs are some http:// hyperlinks to the tools page of the KMail homepage.

When clicking on them from within the helpcenter, they just open in the help dialog. It is not possible to get them to open in a browser.

I think this is not good behaviour. While the helpcenter may be perfectly capable to display the http:// HTML pages, it is not nice for the user to have to browse over the WWW using the helpcenter (it is not possible to bookmark things, not even to rightclick on a link and Copy the Link Location).

I think the best behaviour is to just open Konqueror in its WebBrowsing profile, when a user clicks a http:// (or ftp:// or any other non-help protocol) link.

Fixed in CVS to open http links in Konqueror.

Hmm, I always liked that also external links were opened in KHelpcenter.
This is much faster than opening an external Konqueror and in most
cases it works very well (In some cases even better than Konqueror
because for example advertisment popups aren't shown).

Heh, I can't win.

Using Konqueror gives some advantages, especially now that it's preloaded by default,
which mitigates the speed issue. Unless KHelpcenter gets some ability to bookmark or
a configuration dialog to allow it being an option (and set the fonts, which is even more
often requested,) I think this way suits more people.

Stil, you are the maintainer, and it's a very tiny little patch, I'll revert it if you want.

No, let it in. Let's see how it works out. You are probably right that
it's the better solution at the moment. Bookmarks and font
configuration would be very useful for KHelpcenter regardless of this
issue, though.

Well, I can imagine a context menu for external links: Open in Web browser. So that it normally
opens external links in KHelpcenter (possibliy with added fontsetting and bookmark features)
but that it is very easy to open links in your web browser. (I would rather not hardcode
Konqueror, but call the default HTML handler, be it Opera, Mozilla, Konqueror, etc.)
Comment 6 Lauri Watts 2003-04-15 19:39:00 UTC
To clarify this:

Konqueror is not hardcoded.

The following URL types open directly in KHelpCenter if a link to one is clicked inside
KHelpCenter:
help: glossentry: about: (obviously there are no other about: urls linked in khc docs than
the khelpcenter one itself) man: info: cgi: and ghelp:

all others do not.

Font configuration, bookmarks, and comments on anything else, please add a
comment to one of the open wishes for those issues.
