What are the default settings for a new project? Please share a screenshot of the Settings.

No need for that. You can create a new project or open another one right away without closing the current project. If the current project hasn't been saved, Kdenlive will ask to save before.

Maybe this is downstream packaging related? Perhaps you can test the official AppImage or Flatpak to make sure you can reproduce ?
