Created attachment 188462 [details] journald log kded6 SIGABRT corefile messages 2026-01-12d See also Bug 514443 (drkonqi writes SIGABRT corefile after ksecretd crashes) Bug 514326 (ksecretd crashed drkonqi and kded6) It appears that the X11 display :0 was not accessible to Kded6 and drkonqi at the time(s) when ksecretd had it's corefile dumped. In the case where the Kde desktop is locked (for a longer timespan) by the user (but the user is still logged into the Kde Plasma desktop), can Kded6 be made to ensure that a X11 display :0 remains (continuously) available for active and activated applications? Including the Plasma desktop Panel? Or does this have to be ensured in the kwin_x11/kwin_wayland scope? A Kded6 process should not exist (be stopped), if the user is completely logged out of the Kde desktop? However, may a race condition in the user logout process occur? Like, for example, if the user issues a "sudo reboot" command from within a Konsole window in the Kde desktop? So, if Kded6 wants to issue a warning or request user input while a user session is not (no longer) available, would it be possible to avoid attempting to open a user-dialog window? May Kded6 instead generate a persistent Kde Plasma Notification and save it for later consideration by the (human) user? These are obviously architecture questions between kwin_x11, kwin_wayland and Kde Plasma desktop. Please see below for the instances of the kded6 SIGABRT corefiles. 2026-01-11g Bug 514443 (drkonqi writes SIGABRT corefile after ksecretd crashes) Drkonqi generates a SIGABRT corefile after crashes of ksecretd. It appears that the X11 display :0 was not accessible to drkonqi and kded6 at the time(s) when ksecretd had it's corefile dumped. The Kde desktop screen was locked by the user at that time; with the external display switched off. The Kde user was already logged out, or may have been in the process of logging out of the desktop, at the times of the other instances of this problem. However, shouldn't specifically in the case of the locked Kde desktop a X11 display :0 be available for applications? If this is a security issue in connection with the crashed ksecretd, can drkonqi be made to safely recover it's operation? What is the policy for drkonqi for the cases when the user is either logged out, or when the Kde screen is locked (for a longer timespan)? Would it make sense to have drkonqi generate some desktop Notifications for later use? Product Name: NUC14RVH-B Then: Rebooted the host into Kde Plasma desktop. Worked on the computer as usual. Kept the computer running with the Kde screen locked. Reproduce the problem maybe with: Use the Kde Plasma desktop as usual. Activate the Kde desktop Screen Locking with a configured keyboard shortcut. With the Kde desktop locked, let the computer run for a longer timespan; if in doubt overnight. Other information: There was no installation of new software at the time of this problem. The Kde Plasma desktop was found crashed after re-login into the (ok) screen-locked computer. The computer screen was completely black, with the exception of pre-existing Kde application windows. There was no coredump from plasmashell. The computer has SELinux active, with "SELINUX=permissive". Created attachment 188463 [details] journald log drkonqi SIGABRT corefile messages
I'm not really familiar with the details of DrKonqi, kded, kwin/x11/wayland, or Qt internals, but to the best of my understanding: - As I noted in the other issues, the failure in DrKonqi and kded is the same. - Specifically, it happens in a core component of Qt (`QApplication`), because (as you noted) a display is not available. - For this particular Qt component, this is probably "as designed": it's not intended to be used outside of a GUI context. - When logged out (or at some stages of logging out/in), a display is not available because it likely requires a fully initialized user session. Not logged in => no session => therefore, no display. This should also be "as designed". - When the screen is simply locked, this isn't related to "a security issue in connection with ksecretd", as ksecretd is not responsible for anything of that sort. It's simply a daemon for storing app secrets, nothing more. - But as I understood, this may be related to other security considerations of the _display server_ (access to the display is restricted when locked), or just simple practical considerations (how the lock screen is handled). - Rewriting kded or DrKonqi to not use `QApplication`, or to use some other component when outside of a GUI session, is likely a monumental task that's not worth the developers' effort. So I expect this will be a "won't fix". Note also that this is a) an edge case that shouldn't happen under most circumstances. As in: you're not supposed to have things crashing outside of an active session, and you're normally not supposed to start GUI processes when the session is locked (or is still initializing or tearing down). And b) this would behave the same for any such crash - it just happened to be ksecretd in your case.
