SUMMARY Assigning a keyboard shortcut to enable ime, such as ibus, breaks the standard keyboard input once the shortcut is used to turn it off STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Add a keyboard layout in KDE settings > keyboard, e.g. gb extended 2. Under virtual keyboard, make sure ibus wayland is installed and enabled ?. Configure ibus to use an IME for japanese, E.G. mozc 3. in the plasma system tray settings, locate "input method", and assign a keyboard shortcut, e.g. Meta+Space 4. open kate or some other editor to test 5.
