SUMMARY In the "New Image File Name" dialog which appears after scanning a document, the file extension attached to the file name in the "File name" field overrides the "Files of type" drop-down menu. If the extension is deleted or not provided, the file always saves as PNG regardless of the selected file type. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Scan a document using either the ADF or the flatbed as the scan source. The scan preview window appears. 2. In the scan preview window, click "Save". The "New Image File Name" dialog appears. 3. In the New Image File Name dialog click the "Files of type" drop-down selector and then select any file type other than PNG image. 4. In the "File name" field, rename the file and don't include a file extension. Alternatively, delete the file extension from the default file name. NOTE: The order of steps 3 and 4 does not matter. Either step can come first. 5. Click "Save". OBSERVED RESULTS 1. When the scanned file is saved without an extension attached to its file name (e.g. image0001). RESULT: The saved file is always a PNG image file. The file name has no attached extension. 2. When the scanned file is saved with an extension attached to its file name and that extension DOES match the "Files of type" drop-down menu selection (e.g.: File name = image0001.jpe; Files of type drop-down menu = JPEG image). RESULT: The saved file type DOES match the attached file name extension, and DOES match the "Files of type" drop-down menu selection. 3. When the scanned file is saved with an extension attached to its file name and that extension DOES NOT match the "Files of type" drop-down menu selection (e.g.: File name = image0001.tiff; Files of type drop-down menu = PDF document). RESULT: The saved file type DOES match the attached file name extension, but DOES NOT match the "Files of type" drop-down menu selection. FURTHER OBSERVATIONS - Changing the file type using the drop-down menu automatically changes the extension in the "File name" field, but only if there is an extension already attached to the file name (e.g. image0001.jpg). - If the file name does not have an extension (e.g. image0001), selecting a file type using the "Files of type" drop-down menu no longer adds an extension to the file name automatically. EXPECTED RESULT The "Files of type" drop-down should alone determine the file type that is saved. The "File name" field should not affect the actual file type. Additionally, if a user manually types a filename without an extension, the system should automatically append the extension matching the selected file type.
