Description SilverWhistle 2025-11-12 18:04:48 UTC
SUMMARY

So I install a new app. RPM or Flatpak it doesn't matter, it gets a "New!" label on the Application Launcher. It should disappear once you open the app for the first time, but it doesn't. It doesn't matter how many times I open that app, or from where (Konsole, Application Launcher or desktop icon), it doesn't go away. It's been 2 days since I installed some apps and they still have the label even though I used them multiple times.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install a new app.
2. Open the app.
3. "New!" Label still there.

OBSERVED RESULT

The "New!" Label is there even after I click the app to open it.

EXPECTED RESULT

The "New!" Label should go away.

I see this behaviour too. I didn't wait two days - I ended up just turning the feature off in settings. I haven't updated since 6.5.1, apologies, but hopefully this helps confirm the bug.

I'm not able to reproduce this on Plasma built from git-master or with Plasma 6.5.2 (on Solus or Fedora 43).
I installed an app, and launched it right away. The "New" dot and badge were removed after a few seconds.

What distribution are you using?

What distribution are you using as well?

I'm on a newly installed and updated CachyOS (Arch). I just haven't updated since my first install a few days ago, so I was still on 6.5.1 at the time. I'll do an update, turn "New" items back on, and install something to test. Can report back tomorrow (Friday).

Okay, scratch that previous comment. I STILL haven't updated, and I just turned "New" applications back on again right now, and I noticed that it was highlighting "guvcview" in Multimedia. I installed that maybe a couple of days ago. I've already run it at least once, so I assumed I was still suffering this bug.

However, I start it up, closed it down, and the "New" tag is gone! I notice that a Steam demo I downloaded yesterday also has the tag. Start the demo, close it, tag is gone. So I'm definitely no longer affected by this bug!

Given that I haven't updated, I wonder if this is a "first run" kind of issue? Or it's an issue that is fixed by turning the option off, then re-enabling it? But if so, that will be hard to test, unless perhaps there's an easy way to delete all the config relating to the Application Launcher?

Did you reboot the system after that first update?
Comment 6 scaine 2025-11-16 23:39:00 UTC
I want to say "yes", but honestly, it was over a week or so ago, and a detail like that is lost on me. Perhaps this bug just needs a reboot? If I find myself re-installing in the future (I have a laptop I use for testing distro-hopping, but I always stay on KDE Plasma), I'll try to remember to re-test.

At this point, I'm trying to verify if anyone is still seeing the originally reported behavior.

Do you still experience this on your system?
