Description Ellie 2025-11-09 15:43:11 UTC
SUMMARY

With less reliable internet, the "Get New..." window listing items to download will randomly stop loading new entries when you reach the bottom. There is no loading indicator, no indicator that you reached the true bottom of the list either (which you usually haven't), it just mysteriously ends and if you close and re-open the new window suddenly the end is somewhere else. Sometimes just scrolling up and scrolling down will make the list randomly longer, too. This seems to make it kind of unfeasible to navigate the basic overall item list as intended.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Have slow and unreliable wifi
2. Open "Get new..." for any of the themeing items available in the system settings
3. Scroll down until the displayed list stops

OBSERVED RESULT

The list stops way too early and often at a slightly different point. It acts like you reached the end, there is no useful indicator of any kind that you didn't, and there is no reliable way to get it to load any more entries.

EXPECTED RESULT

When I reach the bottom and it's not the true end of the list, there should always be a spinner or something. When the network request to fetch more items fails or somehow ends up not processed properly, which seems to happen 50% of the time, it should retry every few seconds until it works rather than just end up getting stuck permanently and giving up.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Windows:
macOS:
(available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a terminal window)
Linux/KDE Plasma: postmarketOS 25.06
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.6 (affects KDE 6.4.x too)
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.13.0
Qt Version: 6.8.3

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Affects KDE 6.4.x too.

Thank you for the bug report!

However Plasma 6.3.6 no longer receives updates or maintenance from KDE; active versions are 6.4 or newer. Please upgrade to an active version as soon as your distribution makes it available to you. Plasma is a fast-moving project, and bugs in one version are often fixed in the next one.

If you need help with Plasma 6.3.6, please contact your distribution, who bears the responsibility of providing help for older releases that are no longer receiving updates from KDE.

If you can reproduce the issue after upgrading to an active version, feel free to re-open this bug report.

It happens with 6.4.x too.

Does https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501363#c1 help ?

No, sometimes it'll just stop loading even if I scroll up and back down. However, perhaps it's still the same cause for both, I don't know. I guess the only way to find out would be to try to fix it, and see if both issues go away or not.

However, sometimes networking errors pop up as message boxes. So I don't know about the other issue, but I think for what I'm seeing, there's a problem of a missing robust retry logic somehow involved.
