Description Fredrik Barnå 2025-10-09 13:27:31 UTC
SUMMARY
When renaming several files at once using the Rename Items dialog, the file extension is lost. This happens for all different renaming modes.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Select several files.
2. Open the Rename Items dialog window.
3. Choose any of the three renaming modes.
4. Make any change. The Preview window should show the new name pattern, including the file extension.
5. Press Rename.
6. The files should keep the file extension, as is already shown in the preview.

OBSERVED RESULT
The files should keep the file extension, as is already shown in the preview.

EXPECTED RESULT
The files should keep the file extension, as is already shown in the preview.

I'm not able to reproduce either with Dolphin 25.08.1 on Plasma 6.4.5
KF 6.18.0
KDE Neon User edition

I also can't reproduce with Fedora 42.
Could you attach a screen recording reproducing the bug?

Thanks for the screen recording, that's helpful

In the video
- Choose some files
- Rename and choose "Replace text"
- Replace "Test" with "NoTest"
- The file basenames are renamed, but the extension is removed

I'm not able to reproduce this with Dolphin built from git-master or v25.08.2, using those steps

Can you reproduce this with a brand new user?

I've now had the chance to play around more with this, and I have two major findings to report.

1. The bug is reproducible on a brand new user
2. The bug only occurs for select filename extensions. I tried this by generating empty textfiles, manually changing the file extension, and then renaming them again using file renaming window.
Extensions that were kept: .mp4, .sh, .exe, .zip, .pdf, .html, .doc, .docx, .xlsx, .ods, .bib, .css, .mp3, .py, .tex
Extensions that were lost: .xyz, .inp, .job, .cdxml, .tmp, .cson, .ini

Thanks for your diligence in testing this, that was very helpful. I *can* reproduce this bug on Dolphin built from git-master, with files that have the .xyz extension.
