Description MathieuM 2025-09-21 16:34:45 UTC
SUMMARY
After installing an update coming back from holidays on 14/09/2025, the panel (and it seems Alt+F2 too) freezes after a couple of seconds of use. I can open my browser and apps, but when trying to hover, it shows the thumbnail preview, and stays there. I can't from that point on interact with the panel at all.
The system remains active, as I can use my web browser and terminal

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a couple of programs
2. Hover them in panel to have the thumbnail preview
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
Panel fully freezes

EXPECTED RESULT
Panel should keep responding

Sorry this is happening. Can you reproduce the issue in a new clean user account on the same machine?

Hi, yes. I've created a new user with adduser and could reproduce the bug after installing all updates from the updates tab in discover.

I've attached the list of updates.

Worth noting perhaps that I have a popup when I open the updates tab that reads:
"E: The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/jfi/ppa/ubuntu noble Release' does not have a Release file.
W: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
W: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details."

Also, here's a pastebin with details of what "system upgrade" contains https://pastebin.com/JvFASYfy

Also, I did try to install only the system upgrades, but got the same issue
Comment 5 Nate Graham 2025-09-24 18:15:56 UTC
Thanks. As this could be a packaging or local configuration issue, I'm moving the bug report to Neon for further triage.

sounds like a plasma-shell issue . could you look in the journal and report back anything odd . journalctl -b -r will give the latest entries in the journal in reverse oder

Hi, after further investigation it looks like it only happens if I have tooltips (aka preview of windows in the panel) enabled.
No problem when disabled, but 100% when enabled.

I've attached the output of journalctl -b -r in the attachments above. I'm not great at knowing what's odd, but I do see a lot of
