This is the same issue as bug 508595. When applying 16 point font size or greater, the System Settings - font page has a warning at this stage "Very large fonts may produce odd looking results. Instead of using a very large font size, consider adjusting the global screen scale". This is, unfortunately, a limitation of the window manager code. We discovered that Adjust All Fonts doesn't show the warning, bug 508738 has been filed for that.
