Description Ellie 2025-08-10 22:19:30 UTC
SUMMARY

Apparently a focus bug causes cursor right to sometimes apply to the plasma task list widget rather than the focused window. In practice, this means when I use cursor keys to navigate text in applications, sometimes suddenly cursor right will bring up a completely different window (despite it also being processed as cursor right by the previous window as intended). If I click onto a window a couple of times the focus will sometimes stick again, and cursor right will no longer be also processed by the task bar. I'm not entirely sure this is what happens but I think it is. On my older plasma 6.3 machine this doesn't happen, or I haven't ever seen it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Use cursor keys to navigate text a lot, including cursor right key. This happens with all applications, I tried among others xfce4 terminal, Thunderbird, some electron apps, at least one SDL2 app, and so on. So I don't think the apps or their toolkits are at fault. This seems to be happening at the kwin or plasma level.

OBSERVED RESULT

Cursor right will sometimes switch to a completely different window like alt tab. From how the task bar icons look slightly hovered or focused, I'm thinking it's somehow the plasma icons only task widget grabbing the cursor key input somehow, which I assume must be forwarded to it (incorrectly) by kwin on some level.

EXPECTED RESULT

Cursor right only goes to the focused window.

What is "cursor right key"? Can you write specific steps to reproduce that someone can follow?
Comment 2 Ellie 2025-08-11 21:33:32 UTC
On my 6.4.x postmarketOS Edge machine it just happens out of the blue when I navigate text. On my other 6.3.x postmarketOS 25.06 machine I don't think I've ever seen it happen. I'm referring to the arrow key that SDL3 calls SDLK_RIGHT.
Comment 3 Nate Graham 2025-08-11 22:24:08 UTC
So, like, the right arrow key on a normal keyboard?
Comment 4 Ellie 2025-08-11 23:07:38 UTC
Yes, that one!
Comment 5 Nate Graham 2025-08-12 12:15:48 UTC
And are you pressing this key directly?

Specific steps to reproduce would be really helpful here.
Comment 6 Ellie 2025-08-12 13:18:21 UTC
I'm really not doing anything else than clicking some text entry field and pressing the right cursor key to navigate around in the text, for example to edit the text. Like for example I might do in this bug tracker text area.

Thanks, that's very strange.

I'm 100% sure this is caused by some kind of customization, though. I imagine it never happen in a new clean un-customized account on the same machine, right?

For various reasons I had to reinstall the affected system. The problem is now gone, hinting that this may have been some sort of very obscure configuration error on my end.
