SUMMARY The system crashes, every now and then, when launching a particular set of applications, such as Steam games, Gnome Boxes virtual machines. I am using Wayland. Sometimes I see "kwin_wayland_drm: The main thread was hanging temporarily!" STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Launch a Steam game 2. See its loading screen 3. System is frozen OBSERVED RESULT Keyboard is not responsive. Pressing the "Num Lock" key does nothing. I have to reboot manually. EXPECTED RESULT The system should keep going smoothly. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Linux: Bazzite 42 KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.16.0 Qt Version: 6.9.1 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I think this is a regression bug. I did not notice this happening before 6.4.2. I am now running Bazzite, and before I was using Arch, which had the exact same problem. Perhaps it was a bit naive of me to expect that reinstalling the operating system to something else would have fixed this issue, but I wanted to try Bazzite anyway. I tested my system RAM using Memtest86+ for hours, and found no issue. I'm assuming this crash has something to do if a lot of memory is used on my system. That is, Gnome Boxes, a browser, etc. My system has 4 GB of swap. 16 GB total memory. I am able to use Steam from times, as well as Gnome Boxes fine. But other times, assuming my system is more loaded (I assume), I run into this crash.
Can you check kwin's logs when the hard freeze occurs? You might need to switch to a TTY. journalctl --boot --user-unit plasma-kwin_wayland > ~/log.txt Also, is there any chance that you could retrieve kwin's backtrace when the hard freeze occurs? You would need to ssh from another computer and attach a debugger to kwin process, e.g. sudo gdb -p $(pidof kwin_wayland) then type bt and paste the output here. Thanks.
Thank you for the reply. I tried switching to TTY during the hard freeze, but I was not able to - it was a complete hang. The keyboard was not responsive, toggling "Num Lock" on and off did not do anything. I'll try your second suggestion later and let you know how it went.
