The Task Manager is choking while trying to read data for the pinned apps. Which apps do you have pinned? Can you find their .desktop files (they might live in /usr/share/applications, /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/, ~/.local/share/applications/, /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications/, or ~/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share/applications/) and run `desktop-file-validate` on each of those .desktop files? It's possible one of them is corrupt and we're not handling that properly in Task Manager code.

Hm, just got a very similar backtrace on my Fedora 43 workstation. I'll try Nate's checks and report back.

Validation errors:
/usr/share/applications/globalprotect.desktop: error: value "Network;VPN;" for key "Categories" in group "Desktop Entry" contains an unregistered value "VPN"; values extending the format should start with "X-"

/usr/share/applications/nvvp.desktop: error: value "No" for boolean key "Terminal" in group "Desktop Entry" contains invalid characters, boolean values must be "false" or "true"

~/.local/share/applications/cursor.desktop: error: file contains key "TryExec" in group "Desktop Action new-empty-window", but keys extending the format should start with "X-"

The last one was generated by an older version of the GearLever appimage helper - I had the latest version regenerate the file and it now passes validation.

When I launch GoLand EAP 2026.1 with a click from Jetbrains Toolbox, it crashes without fail. However, if I open this file from the KDE application menu, it does not crash.

I found that MR with a possible fix has already been merged into the master branch. Could you please release KDE Frameworks 6.23.1 with a fix for this issue? It is very difficult to use the system due to constant crashes, and updating to Plasma 6.6.1 did not help. I really hope you can help.

KDE Frameworks doesn't do point releases like that. The next release will be 6.24, which is expected to be March 13. You can see the schedule here:

A message has gone out to distro maintainers asking them to backport this fix to 6.23. You can reach out to your distro to see if they plan to do so.

I would be very grateful to see this fix backported to version 6.23. Could you please tell me who I can contact to find out when it will be released for KDE Neon? Or can I find a test build somewhere (a deb package for manual installation)?

Great, plasmashell no longer crashes, but now instead of crashing, the icons on the panel disappear for a 5-10 seconds. It looks like a temporary solution, but not a complete solution to the problem. I have attached screenshots of the panel in its normal state and in the state when the icons are replaced with empty ones. I have also attached the log. Please note that spam has appeared in the log, which was not there before the update.
