Description Sergiy 2025-07-02 18:51:54 UTC
Hello KDE Developers,

I am writing to provide feedback on a core aspect of the Plasma desktop that I believe creates an unwelcoming environment for a portion of your user base: the naming convention for components like Powerdevil and Bluedevil.

As a person with religious beliefs, the term "devil" carries a strong, serious, and deeply negative meaning. Encountering this term used casually for core system services in my daily operating system is jarring and offensive. While I understand this naming may have historical roots in the Unix "daemon" concept and is possibly intended as a playful tradition, its impact on a global audience with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds cannot be ignored.

a

A desktop environment should feel like a safe and neutral space for all users. The current naming forces users like myself to choose between using a functionally superior desktop and compromising our personal values.

I strongly urge you to consider renaming these components to something neutral and descriptive. Simple, professional names like "Plasma Power Manager" or "Plasma Bluetooth Service" would be far more inclusive and respectful to all users, without sacrificing clarity.

This issue was significant enough for me to make the difficult decision to switch to another desktop environment (GNOME), which employs a more neutral naming scheme. I am writing this not out of anger, but with the hope that you will consider this feedback to make KDE Plasma more welcoming for everyone in the future.

Thank you for your time and for your great work on Plasma.

    Sincerely,
    A former user.

I completely agree!
As a person believing in peace, good things and in God, it's very annoying to these praises / mentions of the devil.
If God is not mentioned anywhere, why do you mention the devil so many times?
It's already annoying that Linux itself uses the word 'demon' or 'daemon' in a lot of places.
Please stop praising or mentioning these unholy beings!
Even if you are an atheist or of some other religion, please understand that these words really annoy the believers.
I think that 'slave' should also be avoided and other words that make people annoyed.

Thanks for writing in with your thoughts. I'll let the developers weigh in from here.

Where are those names being shown?

(In reply to Harald Sitter from comment #3)
> Where are those names being shown?

For example:
- System Settings > Power Management > Help
- System Monitor > Processes
- Discover when installing relevant package updates

Also generally in KDE documentation, invent.kde.org, blogs, support forums, etc. So this is more of a "project" issue than plasmashell specifically.

While the names don't bother me personally, I can see how they can be offputting to some.
